  3. 1980-Reagan defeated Carter for presidency • 1981-The United States began aid with forces in Central America that lasted until 1991 • 1981- Iran releases American hostages • 1981- O’Conner was the first woman appointed to the supreme court

  4. 1982- Recession hits the United States • 1986- The United States bombed Libya in retaliation for alleged Libyan sponsorship of terrorist attacks • 1987- Regan and Gorbachev signed the INF Treaty • 1989- Soviet troops pulled out of Afghanistan

  5. 1989- US troops invaded Panama and arrested the dictator, Manuel Noriega -The nations of Eastern Europe began to overthrow their communist rulers. These included Poland, the Czechoslovakia, Romania, and Yugoslavia • The Berlin Wall was pulled down

  6. The Middle East • 1983- US troops were sent to Lebanon • October 23rd , 1983: Beirut barracks bombing -occurred during the Lebanese Civil War, when two truck bombs struck separate buildings housing US and French military forces members in Lebanon killing 299 American and French servicemen. The organization Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the bombing. Suicide bombers detonated each of the truck bombs. In the attack on the American Marines barracks, the death toll was 241 American servicemen: 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and 3 Army soldiers, along with 60 Americans injured

Iran Contra Affair • Several American hostages had been seized by Muslim extremist groups in Lebanon • The Sandinista government in Nicaragua were solidifying their grip in Central America • Regan wanted congress to provide military aid to the Contras while fighting the Sandinistas, but congress refused

  8. 1985- American diplomats secretly arranged arms sales to Iran in return for Iranian aid in obtaining the release of American hostages held by Middle Eastern terrorists. • After 1985, at least on hostage was set free

  9. Central America • US tried to prevent the expansion of Communism into Central America • Regan sent “military advisors’ to prop in the pro-US government in El Salvador. He also provided aid to the Contra rebels opposing the anti-American Sandinista government in Nicaragua • October, 1983: US sent a force to Grenada to kick out a Marxist government that had overthrown and killed their prime minister

Domestic Events: Domestic spending and social programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, welfare, and students were cut • Tax changes: income taxes on individuals and businesses were lowered significantly while payroll taxes were increased • Foreign policy: congress stepped up military spending and expanded the nations nuclear arsenal • Soviet Union: Regan referred to it as the “evil empire” -tensions had eased after Mikhail Gorbachev took over as soviet leader in 19885

  13. January 28th, 1986 • The space shuttle disintegrated in 1 minute and 13 seconds into the flight • All the members lost their lives, including the Christa McAuliffe, the first member in the space project
