  2. Today’s schedule • Feed back on last week’s presentations • The post methods era • Discovery learning activity/ KWL chart • Analysis • Reflection paper

Notes for everyone • Always have a purpose for watching a video, give students a few questions to considering while watching • Give instructions first, check their understanding, then give out materials • Monitor by walking around the classroom, check on your students • There are ways to incorporate a method/approach into all parts of the lesson Discuss: Did it feel natural to you to completely rely on only one method/approach for your teaching? What was easy about that? What was difficult?

The post-methods era • Approaches: CLT, CBLT, CBI, Cooperative Learning, Lexical Approaches, MI, Natural Approach, Neurolingistic Programming, TBLT, Whole Language • Methods: Audiolingualism, Community Language Learning, Situational Language Teaching, The Silent Way, Suggestiopedia, TPR • Discuss: Methods tend to have a shorter “shelf life” than approaches do Q: Why do you think this is so?

Q: Why do you think this is so?

  6. the acceptance of a method depends on its ease of use and difficulty of introducing new changes Questions to ask when considering a new method: • What advantages does the approach or method offer? • How compatible is it with teachers’ existing beliefs and attitudes, and organization of classroom and schools? • How easy or difficult is the new concept to understand? • Has it been tested in other classrooms? • Are the benefits clearly communicated? • How clear and practical is it? • Discuss: Let’s say your principal just learned about *insert method* and thinks it’s the best thing ever. Walk through the questions above with your partner. Will it be easy or difficult to introduce it to your school? Let’s role-play!

The post-methods era • Feel free to use approaches/methods and ideas freely & creatively • Teachers should feel free to adapt the method/approach to make it their own • Consider your own personal beliefs on.. • Your role in the classroom • The nature of teaching and learning • What problems learners encounter and how to address these issues • What a successful learning activity is • The structure of an effective lesson • Discuss: Consider the points above. Which methods/approaches fit your teaching style well? Which ones wouldn’t?

  8. KWL Charts • Discuss: Let’s say you were just introduced to KWL charts. Would you adopt it for your classroom? What kind of teacher would/wouldn’t like KWLs? • Consider your own personal beliefs on.. • Your role in the classroom • The nature of teaching and learning • What problems learners encounter and how to address these issues • What a successful learning activity is • The structure of an effective lesson

The post-methods era • Let’s look at some lesson plans created by HUFS students step-by-step • Q: Which method(s) or approach(es) do you think the teacher trainees were considering when they were making their lesson plans? Why? Be prepared to share with the class • In some cases each step of their lesson plan might be influenced by a different method, and in other cases one method stands out for the whole lesson.

  10. Bookstore scavenger hunt • Part 1: Three English textbooks. • What’s the textbook name? Which company made it? • What’s its target age/level? • What methods/approaches do you think are being used in this textbook. Why? • Is the textbook effective for the targeted age/level? Why? • Part 2: Other hunting questions • Were any of the books you found multicultural? (talked about/embraced many cultures?) • Did you see any differences between British/American/Korean textbooks? • Did any of your textbooks look like you could adapt for the multiple intelligences?

  11. Reflection paper (final) • After learning and presenting about several methods and approaches over the last semester, which one(s) do you think will influence your teaching the most? Why? • Additional questions: • Which concepts from those methods/approaches did you find appealing? • How do you imagine you’ll use that method/approach in your class? • How will you blend these several methods/approaches together in your class? • Please write a 1 page paper, single or double spaced, Word document • Turn in via email by Saturday, June 14th
