  2. What Can I Observe?Choose a piece of Chex Mix to observe. Keep it a secret from those around you.

  3. How can I communicate? Using your observations, write a brief description of your chosen piece of Chex Mix…We will see if your classmates can guess which piece you observed!

  4. How do I make good predictions? Without opening your baggie, which type of snack do you think there will be the most of? ____________ The least? _____________ Test your prediction. Open your baggie and separate the pieces. Were you correct?

  5. How Can I Classify? Think of one way that you could classify your Chex Mix pieces. Place all of your pieces in Group 1 or Group 2. Group 1Group 2 What attribute (characteristic) did you use to classify your pieces into these two groups?

  6. Continued… Now look at your pieces. This time, classify them in a different way. Divide your pieces into two groups again. Group 1Group 2 What attribute (characteristic) did you use to classify your pieces this time?

  7. Continued… • Now let’s try something harder… • This time classify your pieces into groups so that each item has two common attributes. Group 1Group 2 What two attributes did you use to classify your pieces into these two groups?

  8. What Can I Measure? How many pretzels do you think would be found in a large bag of Chex mix? Guess 1 _____________ Guess 2 _____________ Guess 3 _____________ What might be a way to come up with a more accurate answer?

  10. Continued… If a large bag of Chex mix contains 10 cups of mix, how many pretzels might there be? How do you know? What if the large bag of Chex mix contained 15 cups of mix? How many pretzels might there be? How did you come up with your answer?

  11. What Can I Infer? You have already classified the pieces of mix in your baggie by putting every different type of piece in separate piles. Which type of snack did you have the most of? The least? What inference can you make as to which type of snack there will be the most of in any given bag? The least?

  12. Now you are a scientist! You have completed an experiment with chex mix in which you have made predictions (hypotheses), tested those predictions (manipulating variables), classified, communicated, measured, inferred… All of these things are what scientists do in the scientific process!
