  1. NCC Task Force Richard Seto NCC Task Force Meeting Dec 14, 2007 BNL

  2. Goals • Started with ncc bullets • The goals in simplest terms for the NCC task force is to produce the following figure of merit (FOM) plots from realistic physics simulations. Realistic means a full simulation using PISA with detector response, reconstruction, and data analysis. • a) R_AA for pi0 as a function of pt for various centralities in AuAu and dAu collisions • b) Direct photons cross sections, and likewise R_AA. • c) R_AA for the Chi_C via its decay to J/psi photon as a function of pt for various centralities. Very likely we will limit this to rapidity 1-1.5 • d) A_LL(pt) for direct photons in 500 GeV polarized pp collisions • d') Because we already have jet reconstruction going in pp collisions we should easily be able to use this information to get A_LL(x) giving a greater sensitivity to low-x • e) a demonstration that we can we can extract pi0's at various angles in various centrality collisions with a known efficiency - This should answer the projective Geometry question. HI HI spin answer to committee

  3. Schedule- work over the holidays • Simulations • chic – holidays – goal done by Dec 23 (Sky/Carla/Ondrej/Rich) • Projective Geometry answer – done in a week (Edouard) • 2 track pi0 – will be done in a week (Rich) • single track pi0 – holidays – goal done by Jan 1 (Dave/Ondrej/Stefan) • Direct photon signal in AuAu – Jan 5 • ALL - Jan 7 • Writing • Assignments (write over the holidays) • Intro – Rich (note prelim version of bullets done) • Reconstruction – Edouard • Calibration etc – Ondrej • pi0 in heavy ions – Dave/Rich/Stefan • direct photon in heavy ions – Takao • Chic- Rich/Carla/Sky • Spin – Ken/Todd • Trigger – John • Summary – Rich • Timing • To brant – Jan 14 • To collaboration – Jan 20 • To DOE – End of Jan gee – maybe I should have prepared for this class over Christmas….. hwk due jan 8, 2007 Welcome to Statistical Mechanics Prof. Richard Seto grade 2 room 9

  4. Latest 2 gamma spectra (near final) • To be turned into R_AA • Calibrations some not latest, some latest • Cuts – for Heavy ion (i.e. all except 500 GeV pp) • Chi2<10 • opening angle >35-50 depending on run (standardize to 50) • pt>200 • For cut level 2 – no cut on y_gamma • for cut level 3 – y_gamma<1.5 • Note – 2 gamma’s close up at ~E=~4-5 GeV • ~3 GeV Pt at y=1.5 and 1 GeV at 2.5

  5. Example AuAu 80-92% real pairs “hi pt” pi0 embedded in bkg mixed pairs pi0 embedded in bkg subtracted spectrum Fluctuations to be added in later real pairs bkg only shows S/B m=.133 sigma=.022 will typically show only these two add in bkg from min bias events with no “high pt pi0” Fit to subtracted spectrum y=1-1.5 pt=1.5-2

  6. 2 gamma pp 200/500 (spin) pp mb 500 GeV ppmb y=1-1.5 pt=1.5-2 y=1-1.5 pt=1.5-2 y=1.5-2 pt=1.0-1.5 y=2.0-2.5 pt=1.0-1.5

  7. heavy ions AuAu 50-60% opening angle cut must be increased dAu central y=1-1.5 pt=1.5-2 y1-1.5 pt1-1.5 y=1.5-2 pt=1.0-1.5 y1-1.5 pt2.5-3.0

  8. pp dAu cent S/B ~0.2 ~0.6 ~0.02 AuAu 50-60% central Arms AuAu 0-10% S/B @1-1.5GeV ~0.005 central Arms pp S/B @1-1.5 GeV ~1.5

  10. R_AA stat error only – 2 gamma y=1-1.5 single track takes over Assumed AuAu – 10B min bias events (since 50-60 is 10% of cross section) scale error bars by 3 for 1B

  11. Going to higher centrality • Need more cuts • chisqL<2 chisqT<4 • Need to use DST probably – since VERY CPU intensive – running now at ISU longitudinal chi2 transverse chi2

  12. AuAu b8 30-40% eff tot pt=1.5-2 pt=2.0-2.5 pt=2.5-3.0 m=.165 sig=.035 m=.175 m=.123 sig=.030

  13. AuAu b5 10-20% eff tot pt=1.5-2 pt=2.0-2.5 0-10% running at ISU now m=.133 sig=.035 m=.113 sig=.038

  15. My plans • My plan is to wrap the two track pi0 up in the next week, and spend the holiday • A) writing • B) helping with the chic. • I hope to return from the holiday with the beginnings of a draft • I will also make assignments for parts of this writeup that can be written before we have the final plots in the next week.
