  1. Team 06 Chilean Miner Rescue Justin Menapace Jim Miller Mike Pochan Brandon Swartz Zach Ziobro

Background • On August 5th 2010 two collapses in the Copiapó mine in Chile occurred. • This left 33 men trapped 700 meters below ground. • The Miners survived underground for 68 days before being rescued. • August 5th to 22nd status of the miners was unknown, until one of the exploratory boreholes reached the shelter where the miners were.

  3. Drilling Plans • Several different kinds of drilling equipment and different rescue strategies were tried in parallel. • There were 3 plans tried in parallel code named Plan a, Plan b, and Plan c. • Since all three plans were running in parallel the various teams need to create a detailed communications management plan.

  4. The Results • Plan A, and B were very similar both involved drilling pilot holes and then drilling wider holes facilitate the use on an escape pod. • Plan C involved using a drill that could create a large enough hole from straight away. • Plan B suffered the least set-backs and reached the miners on October 9th

  5. Communication • While the drilling plans were running the plans to implement escape capsule were also running in parallel. • Based the project reports from the drilling teams, the technical limitations were understood this allowed the project teams to forecast the proper implementation of the escape capsule.

  6. Communication cont’d • All the project teams had to collaborate to solve this very complicated problem. • The 3 plans in parallel model provided redundancy incase one was to fail, but also eliminated the possibility of groupthink.

  7. Project Success • The project was completed at a cost of 10 to 20 million dollars. • Since the miners were indeed rescued the scope was met. • Moreover the project was completed well within the time constraint . It was originally projected that the drilling would be done around Christmas.
