  2. Obesity in older adults is garnering more attention in recent yearsThe notion that all elderly people are small and frail no longer is universal

  3. There is a relationship between obesity and disability in older adults

  4. In older adults, obesity is associated with the burden of multiple chronic conditions, functional limitations and poor quality of life

  5. In a longitudinal study of 2803 older adults, being overweight at 25 years old was associated with decreased physical performance in their 70s Jensen and Hsiao, CurrOpinClinNutrMetab Care, 13:46-51

  6. BMI may not be a reliable measure of obesity in older persons due to body composition changes that come with advancing age

  7. There seems to be a stronger association between waist circumference and risk of functional decline Angelman SB, Harris TB, Melzer D. Int J Obes 2006;30:364-373

  8. Diet quality defined by consumption of whole fruits and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean meats and legumes is inversely associated with mortality Ford, Jensen, Hartman, et al. J NutrGerontolGeriatr 2013;32(2):85-105.

  9. Take home message: weight management through younger years will contribute to more successful aging with less weight-related disability
