  3. Risk Analysis Characterization of susceptibility to perturbation Characterization of resilience to perturbation “Five Step Process for Integrated Ecosystem Assessment” (NOAA) Scoping Identify goals of EBM and threats to achieving goals Develop ecosystem indicators and targets Data Acquisition Monitoring of Ecosystem Indicators Assessment of ecosystem status relative to EBM goals Management Actions

  4. Integrated Indicators???? NOAA (various) NCCR GOOS/IOOS EPA ROE SRR- FW SRR- Forests SRR-Rangelands USFS Indicators Heinz Center States EPA Nat Wadeable Streams USGS NAWQA NOAA CZM indicators PART, GPRA All with a piece of the water pie….

  8. What are your target audiences? What are your goals? Who are your partners? What data do you rely on?

  9. Reasonable Questions? Why are your indicators different from mine (all others…)? Is it possible to meet your needs using X (indicator, data source, analytical method)? If not, what would it take to convert (i.e., translate, develop new capacity)? What are the benefits of improved consistency across (states, regions, programs)?

  10. Opportunity Knocks: • National system of indicators • Incentives • Seize the moment

  11. Thank you….

  12. April 2004 Summit Recommendations • All users represented • Not federal-only • Strategy, not micro-management • Slowly and partially at first • Don’t neglect size of pie • High level support • Incentives • Big money is in existing programs
