  1. Owls in the Family By Farley Mowat Power point by Kenley Blake #4

  2. Chapter 1 There are three boy’s and it’s spring time in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada . They want to find an owl’s nest to get a baby owl for a pet. One of the boys was not there but the other two boys went looking on the prairie. One of the boys name is Bruce, the other boys name is Billy and the last one is Murray . There was a crow annoying Bruce, so Bruce went up a tree to get the crows eggs. He wanted to get back at the crow so he climbed up the tree and he was carrying three crows eggs in his mouth. He slipped a little and the crows eggs broke in his mouth. He tried to get the taste out with a tuna fish sandwich because it was lunch time.

  3. Chapter 2 After they ate lunch, they started walking and found this huge bluff of crows . They were there because a great horned owl was there. They found it’s nest. It was an old crows nest. They said they were going to bring Mr. Miller, their old teacher, back tomorrow. When they got home, Billy told his dad he was going to have an owl as a pet. His dad said “not another pet!” Then Billy’s dad thought again because he thought the owls would eat all the rats, gophers, rabbits, mice and all the other pets, so he said ok. The next day they brought Mr. Miller back with them . By the end of the day, the owl flew away with Mr. Miller’s hat and they also knew that there were three baby owls the right age to take home as pets.

  4. Chapter 3 Billy, Bruce and Murray went looking on the prairie because there was a storm the night before. They went to check to see if the owls were all right. It was such a disaster. It looked like a tornado hit the prairie. When they were looking at the wreckage, one of them came across two of the three owls dead. They had a funeral for the two owls. One of them went to the flipped over nest and tried to look under it. Then something bit him. They turned it over completely and there was the last owl. All alone they took it to Billy’s house and they kept the owl. There they decided to name the owl Wol.

  5. Chapter 4 • One day Billy decided to ride his bike. When he was riding his bike, two boys were throwing rocks in a barrel. The boys asked Billy if he wanted to go and have some fun. He went over there and looked in the barrel and saw a baby owl at the bottom. Billy said he will trade them his scout knife for the baby owl. They said sure because the owl was almost dead. They named the other owl Weeps because he was so sad all the time. One of the boys said his dad shot the mother of the owl and took the owl and gave it to him. At Billy’s house, Wol scared the maid. She packed up all of her stuff and left.

  6. Chapter 5 • The owls loved to be like humans instead of owls. They like to walk like humans. Only Wol knew how to fly but he hated it. He also knew a trick to rip chicken wire. They hated to be in their cage. One day he tried to rip the chicken wire, and he did. He followed Billy everywhere he went . When Wol was in the yard and a dog saw him, the dogs would run and hide because they were scared of the owl.

  7. Chapter 6 • They entered a contest for best display and best pets. They painted Rex, Bruce’s dog, to look like a zebra and Mutt, Billy’s dog, like a lion. They put doll clothes on the owls, a pink dress on Weeps and a sailors suit on Wol .They made a cage for the gophers and a separate cage for the white mice. Bruce had a special animal in store for the contest. When they got there, they saw so many animals that they could not believe their eyes . Then finally Bruce showed every one the special pet. It was a Rattlesnake! Every one was so scared they went mad. There was madness! It was a madhouse!

  8. Chapter 7 • Hiding the bone, dinner stealing and tail squeezing are Wol’s favorite games that he plays when he wants to bug Billy’s dog, Mutt. One day Wol caught a skunk and decided to bring it in the house. It made the dining room stink! The room smelled so bad they could not eat in their dining room for three weeks.

  9. Chapter 8 • The three boys were walking on the path to their cave. They found the cave about a year ago and wanted it to be their fort, and now it is. When they were swimming in the river by the cave, two older boys walked up and threatened them. The older boys said to tell them where the cave was or they would hurt them Billy, Bruce and Murray. Wol was up in a cottonwood tree and he looked like a ghost because he is all white. He did his great horned owl scream and flew down. The two older boys were so scared they ran away.

  10. Chapter 9 • Billy had to go to school and Wol was following him. He had to go back to the house to put Wol in his cage. Weeps stayed in his cage like a good little owl. After he took him back, Wol broke the chicken wire again and he and Weeps snuck out of the cage. Then Billy saw them following him and tied Wol to his bike at school and ran as fast as he could to French, his first class, before the bell rang. They called the teacher Fifi. They give the mean teacher nicknames. By the time school started Wol had untied him self and slid through the window. He landed on the desk and started sliding. It looked like he was on ice skates and landed in her lap.

  11. Chapter 10 • They went camping in Dundurn. They brought their canoe. When they got there, they saw a ton of crows. More crows than you have ever seen. When they saw Wol and Weeps they automatically went in to a bluff. Wol and Weeps hid and the crows went away. Dad got his shot gun out and tried to shoot the crows but it did not work. Wol went out on a post and the crows went crazy. By the time they got home, they were a lot less crows in Dundurn.

  12. Chapter 11 • Billy is moving to Toronto. On the way there, they stopped by Bruce’s house to give the owls to Bruce. They could not take the owls to Toronto because Toronto is a very busy place and the owls should not live like that. Bruce moved away a long time ago. They now own a fox farm. Billy and his family are staying at Bruce’s house for a couple of days. They had a lot of fun. They are going to keeping Mutt. Billy does not want to move but his dad’s job is moving, so he has to move too .

  13. Conclusion • The end of the book made me a little sad because most of the boys moved away and everything changed. The owls went to be with Bruce. But, they didn’t get to be with Billy and Murry anymore. They were still very lucky to have a good family though and to have someone to take care of them.

  14. I give this book 5 stars I like this book because I like to read about animals. This book made me feel like I really knew the animals. I liked all of the details.
