? Are young women in the program more likely or less likely to commit violence?
Logical approach lit review “Although lower in percentage, almost two-thirds of adolescent females, regardless of race, had committed an act of violence. Similarly, white adolescent females, although engaging in fewer acts of violence than males of either race, engaged in almost twice as many such acts as did black adolescent females (2.1 vs. 1.5)” (Stiffman, Dore, and Cunningham 1996; 494). When it come to homicide, girls may be lashing out with violence due to past abuse. Girls are oftentimes more likely to face sexual abuse from a family member than boys are, which in turn causes them to face severe emotional distress, which can lead up to a murder. “Additionally, females who commit homicide were more likely to experience family abuse than their male counterparts. In fact, the vast majority (four of five) of female juveniles who killed had been abused by a family member” (Darby, Allan, Kashani, Hartke, and Reid 1998; 372-373). Abuse whether sexual, psychological, or physical may also be a cause for a rise in homicide committed by females. The trauma caused by the abuse may cause girls to feel like there is no way out other than to kill the perpetrator, which may cause an uptick in female crime and a narrowing of the gender gap when it comes to crime.
Literature Review “Second, girls’ violence is typically perpetrated within or near the home or school and among family and other primary groups; male youth are much more likely to commit serious or injury producing violent acts within or near street or commercial settings and among aquaintances, strangers or other secondary groups” (Steffensmeier et al. 2005; 357). “Although lower in percentage, almost two-thirds of adolescent females, regardless of race, had committed an act of violence. Finally, there is a view amongst some that the closing of the gender gap when it comes to violence is a falsity. Those who espouse this view feel that the statistics that show female violence is on the rise is caused by the no tolerance laws at the structural level of the criminal justice system. “Another possibility is that girls arrest gains are artifactual, a product of recent changes in public sentiment and enforcement policies for dealing with youth crime and violence that have elevated the visibility and reporting of girls violence” (Steffensmeier et al. 2005; 356
Literature Review “Girls and boys, however, are socialized within families to develop relationships and manage conflict differently. Modeling by maternal caretakers encourage girls to develop caring, empathic relationships that impact the way that they learn to assert themselves, manage anger, and protect themselves from harm. As a result of the strong emphasis on the importance of relationships, girls follow stringent gender codes of behavior and go underground with their needs and emotions as a way of not threatening such important interpersonal connections” (Letendre 2007; 357-358). Patton (2012) states, “In the latest report available, the Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency and Prevention (2005) reported that female juvenile arrest rates for assault and simple assault increased 290% between 1980 and 2004. This is truly alarming when comparing that to the increase in male juvenile arrest rates for the same crimes. The statistics show a much slower rate being reported for male juvenile arrest rates for assault and simple assault at only 108% increase during this same time period” (186).
