  5. Comments • Today's eruption of violence along Israel's northern border was a predetermined initiative of the Syrian and Iranian regimes, carried out by their proxy militia in Lebanon - Hizbollah. • Kidnapping of Israelis has been at the top of the Hizbollah agenda for quite some time. Just five months ago, Hizbollah launched a kidnapping operation in the Mt. Dov area which was foiled by the IDF. In response, Hizbollah initiated a barrage of artillery and rocket fire. • Today's violent attacks were a repeat of this failed attempt, only more severe and intense in scope. Hizbollah's two prong attack on the village of Rajar and an IDF outpost involved sophisticated planning and tactics (ATV's and motorcycles), clearly demonstrating that rather than being deterred from continuing with such activities, they are only further encouraged.

  6. The Syrian motivation behind such an attack is clear. President Asad is desperately trying to deflect international attention and the threat of sanctions against his regime following incriminating evidence of Syrian involvement in the Harari assassination. Iran, for its part, is also looking for every opportunity to divert international attention from their duplicitous efforts towards developing nuclear weapons which just last week made headlines as they once again refused a compromise offer. In addition to the tactical motivation of both Syria and Iran to divert international focus from themselves, their long-standing strategic goal of undermining regional stability and escalating the political chaos, is also well served by such violence. Comments

  7. Despite the clear complicity of Syria and Iran, Lebanon should not be perceived as an innocent bystander, but rather a guilty accomplice in the crime for its persistent refusal to take full responsibility over its sovereign territory as it is obliged to do by the basic precepts of international law, and as clearly stipulated in UNSCR 1559. Israeli casualties in today's aggressive attacks are once again the price Israel pays for the criminal activities of the Middle East's neighborhood bullies. The international community as a whole has legislated "law" with regard to Hizbollah and the situation in south Lebanon in the form of UNSCR 1559 – it is about time that the international community which legislated the "law" take the necessary steps to have that "law" effectively executed. In the absence of a concerted international effort at neutralizing the Hizbollah threat, Israel will be justified and even obliged to take the measures necessary for the protection of its sovereign territory and population.
