  2. Models • A DGN file is really just a container for Models. • A single DGN file can contain both 2D and 3D models. • A Model is a container for graphical elements. • A DGN file must have at least one Model.

  3. Models A Tip for Advanced users of Models • To remove the Master Model (default) from the DGN file, do a File>Save As…>Options>Filter>Models. Then select only the model that you want to be your new default or Master Model, and save the file. The new file will contain only the model you selected. You can then import any of the other models you want to add to your new file.

  4. Models A few things to consider when working with models • 2D and 3D models can be contained in the same DGN file. • Every Model has it’s own units. • Models in the same DGN file can be referenced to each other. • If you give someone your DGN file, they get all the models it contains, so you could avoid losing reference files if they were all contained in the same DGN file. • Lots of Models in one DGN file can increase the size of the DGN file. • You can not delete the Default model of a DGN file, but you can rename it.

  5. Questions and Discussion Q: If you have a lot of models in one DGN file, will that slow you down. A: Yes, it can. I have noticed that you get slowed down much more significantly with the number of connections or attachments than you do with total file size. Even if the references are not displayed, the connection to another file or model can slow down MicroStation. Comment: InRoads scans the Active model, so if in the process of design, you have repeatedly cut cross sections and redisplayed them and you notice a significant slow down in InRoads functionality, you can create a new model on the fly leaving InRoads open and increase the speed at which InRoads will operate.
