  1. High School(Secondary) Teacher By: Matt O’Toole

  2. Choice and Why • My choice was High School teacher • I choose this mainly because I have a love of learning new things and helping other people learn new things • I like getting the chance to try and help people, which is another thing I would get to do as a teacher. • I believe I would make good teacher and many other people have agreed that I would

  3. TRAINING • Completion of four years of college and obtaining of a Bachelors Degree in the subject sought to be taught • A student-teacher internship • Acquiring a teaching license • Completing a teacher training program

  4. Additional Training or Qualifications • Becoming knowledgeable in the subject taught • Learning how to use certain technologies or computer programs used in class • Being able to communicate effectively to a class

  5. What Duties Will Be Preformed • Teach students subjects at a greater depth than in Elementary school • Create and administer lesson in class • Assigning and grading various tests, projects, or other assignments • Meet with parents • Help students with career guidance in certain cases • Maintain classroom discipline • Observe and evaluate a students performance

  6. Average Salary • The median annual wages of a High school teacher ranged from $47,100 to $51,180

  7. Benefits Advancement • Good, guaranteed pension plan • Low cost medical • Lots of vacation time • Tuition is paid more education • Can work to become an administrator but then you stop being a teacher

  8. My Plan • Finish high school with similar grades to what I’m getting now • Attend a college that features a good education program • As hiring for teachers is currently not the greatest, I would prefer that the college has a high employment rate • Enjoy my job

  9. What did I Learn that Affected My Plan • Because I had no plan or any real prior knowledge at the beginning of the assignment, nearly everything I learn effected my plan • A specific example of this is finding a college that has a high employment rate for its students who want to become teachers because unemployment for teachers is high

  10. Pros & Cons Pros Cons Area of political cuts High unemployment rate Blame is often place on teachers for unsuccessful students Limited pay • I like to help people learn something new as much as I like to learn something new • Lots of vacation time • Good benefits • Can stay working in a subject that I’m interested in

  11. Other Ways to Use My degree • The degree for the subject I teach could be used in a different career that the same degree could be used. • Ex) A chemistry teacher could get a job in chemistry lab • Ex) A history teacher could become a historian or museum curator

  12. Resources • www.bls.gov • www.pacareerzone.org • My parents (who both teacher) • www.careers.org
