  1. US TileCal MeetingatUTA Possible Electronics Evolution J. Pilcher University of Chicago

  2. Digital LVL1 trigger • At present analog LVL1 signals are transmitted off-detector and digitized • Susceptible to noise pickup • Limited dynamic range (hard to see muons) • Signals used for triggering are not the same as those sent to LVL2 trigger • Most modern experiments try to avoid this • Requires digitization on-detector • Formation of digital sums from signals sent to LVL2 J. Pilcher

  3. Digital LVL1 trigger • Non-trivial change at this point • LAr only digitizes after LVL1 • To use analog pipeline developed for SSC • Could digitize analog sum on detector and transmit • TileCal digitizes before LVL1 • Need to add digitizations to form tower sums • Geography of digitizer boards not suited to this • Can’t access digits in TileDMU • Signals needed in tower sums are distributed over several digitizer boards J. Pilcher

  4. Digital LVL1 trigger • Forming digital LVL1 TileCal signals • Add digitizations from all PMTs in a tower every 25 ns • Ship off detector • 16 bits/tower x 40 MHz = 640 Mbps / tower (OK!) • Use optical ribbon cable with 9 optical signals per ribbon J. Pilcher

  5. Digital LVL1 trigger • What does it take for TileCal? • Revised TileDMU chips • Capable of handling more channels/chip so all signals of a tower are in same chip • Perhaps 1 TileDMU per tower • 9 per LB drawer, 7 per EB drawer • Incorporate adder in each TileDMU chip • Revised digitizer boards • 4 boards per drawer with up to 3 TileDMU per board • Fewer fine-pitch flex foils and connectors J. Pilcher

  6. Digital LVL1 trigger • Logistics • Need operational experience with present system before proposal • Current system may have “issues” requiring attention • Revised system might address these as well as upgrade • Present groups likely tired of electronics for a while • Many operational and physics issues to address • Could map out design based on current view • Guesstimated cost $2M J. Pilcher

  7. LV Power Supplies • Assumes present power supply plan proves unsatisfactory • “eastern European design” • No experienced engineer or physicist • Use near-commercial “bricks” • Plan mechanical mounting and cooling • Monitoring and control • Cabling • Logistics • Can’t suggest this before experience with first version J. Pilcher

  8. Commissioning and Integration • Putting the detector together • Surface mechanical assemblies • Making it work • Monitoring and control • Calibration • Collecting calibration data • Filling and using data bases • Insufficient resources to support physics personnel at CERN • Students, post-docs, scientists, faculty J. Pilcher
