NATO Today • NATO still remains active and dedicated to its • fundamental purpose which is to safeguard the freedom • and security of its member countries by political and • military means. • NATO also provides crisis management and • peacekeeping services. • NATO is currently involved with missions and operations • in Afghanistan, Kosovo, Mediterranean Sea, Horn of • Africa, and in Africa.

  2. Afghanistan • NATO's most significant operational commitment to date. • Was first established in 2001 by the United Nations, but • was delegated to NATO operations in August 2003. • Currently 87,000 troops from 49 different countries who • are deployed throughout various areas in Afghanistan. • the authority of the Afghan central • government in order to create an environment conducive • to the functioning of democratic institutions and the • establishment of the rule of law". • NATO is also trying to prevent Afghanistan from • becoming a safe haven for terrorist

Kosovo • NATO entered Kosovo in 1999 • in an attempt to end the • widespread of violence. • Currently has 5000 allied • troops who are there to maintain a • strong presence and promote peace. • Kosovo declared independence in February 2008, but • NATO agreed to maintain their presence in order to • continue to promote change and peace for this • developing nation.

Monitoring the Mediterranean Sea • Monitoring the Mediterranean Sea in search of any illegal • terrorist activity. • Operation first began after September 11th 2001 in means • of expanding their operations to find and identify • terrorists. • Presence in the Mediterranean Sea has promoted safety • and helped eliminate illegal activities

  6. African Union • Mission began in 2005 • Mission is aimed to end violence while improve • humanitarian situations. • NATO has provided airlift support and peacekeeping • efforts. • Mission was only supposed to last for a short period • of time, but on several occasions has been extended.

  7. Ethical Considerations • Some ethical considerations to consider include: - The expansion of NATO - NATO's involvement and services around the world - The research and use of human performance enhancements (HPE)
