  2. 1894 • Nicholas II becomes Tsar • Will rule with total control

  3. 1903 • Russian Marxist Party splits: • Mensheviks • Bolsheviks

  4. 1905-1905 • Russo-Japanese War • Russian Army and Navy Defeated

  5. 1905 • Bloody Sunday Massacre • Revolution of 1905

  6. 1905 • Revolution of 1905 put down • Russia establishes a Duma (Parliament)

  7. 1908 • Soviets form – organizations of workers that serve as local governments

  8. 1914-1918 • The Great War

  9. 1914 • Nicholas II takes control of the Army, goes to the front • So… he is not present to run the government from Petersburg

  10. 1916 • Rasputin, healer and advisor, is assassinated

  11. 1917 • March Revolution • Forces Nicholas II to abdicate for himself and son • Provisional government established • War continues in Europe

  12. 1917 • Germany sends Lenin (revolutionary) back into Russia • He had been exiled for stirring up discontent • Slogan: Peace, Bread, and Land!

  13. 1917 • October (November) Revolution • Bolsheviks (led by Lenin and Trotsky) take over government with support of military

  14. 1918 • Russia ends involvement in WWI • Treaty of Brest-Litovsk • Gives up 1/3 of population and ¼ of territory to avoid invasion by Germany

  15. 1918-1922 • Civil War in Russia • Reds (Communists) v. Whites

  16. 1919 • Romanov Family executed

  17. 1921 • Lenin issues the New Economic Policy

  18. 1923 • Lenin suffers a stroke, becomes an invalid • Dies in 1924

  19. 1929 • Joseph Stalin takes control of Communist Party in Russia • Issues 5-Year-Plan to industrialize Russia
