  1. Effective Membership Recruitment Techniques Mike Godwin Director of Membership - VASHRM

  2. Who is this dude? • Years of experience in medical staffing/recruitment industry • Former VP of Membership for TCHRMA (Tri-County Human Resource Management Association in Charleston, SC) • Former President for Hampton Roads SHRM (13% increase in membership in 2012) • Current Director of Membership for the State Council

  3. First, use what SHRM provides! • Ask Shelly Trent or Crystal Adair (or your regional person) for a list of those people in your area that are not affiliated with a chapter but have a SHRM membership • Look specifically for those with PHR/SPHR/GPHR credentials and target them! • Send out a mailer – inviting them to a free “check out the chapter” event

  4. Plan and Execute the Event • Location, location, location… and reputation • Plan an event that represents what you want potential members to think of your chapter (and one that is close to your target audience) • Make the event FUN… REALLY FUN. • Board member interaction • Free appetizers/food for those who come - discounted drinks? Perhaps plan it at a Happy Hour time frame. • Involve SHRM national or VASHRM if you can! (maybe Shelly or I can visit?)

  5. Get your house ready for guests! • Recruitment Committee idea/Greeters • No board member can sit at the same table • Perhaps bring in a recruiter or manager of a staffing firm to talk with your Board about effective recruitment techniques for when they sit next to potential new members • Announce those who are at their first or second meeting in your chapter announcements (make it fun!!) • Differentiate these individuals from others (Blue Sticker idea) • At the end of meeting, always PUSH designation forms! It never hurts to ASK someone to JOIN.

  6. RETAIN your New Members • Focus on what our core competency is – providing great speakers/educational opportunities/instructors/etc for HR professionals • Think outside the normal parameters of programming… look for more progressive programs that may attract new members
