  3. NERC Training Review A: NERC should take a more strategic and hands-on approach to its training investment. B: NERC should move to a 4 year notional studentship in 2014 C: NERC should introduce success criteria against which training can be judged. D: NERC should introduce a ‘Dual-Core Model’ for studentships, which specifically delineates between responsive and focused studentships. E: NERC should allocate responsive studentships through Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs); and focused studentships through competitions when there is a recognised need. IAPETUS DTP Operating Principles: • Support scientifically excellent projects aligned to research strengths • All DTP students will be supervised jointly between two (or more) ROs as appropriate to maximise the benefit of the DTP for our students • Provide a world-leading research training environment for students • Provide reciprocal rights of access to technologies, facilities, equipment and expertise

  7. IAPETUS DTP THEMES Global Environmental Change Incorporates three strands Ice-sheet dynamics, sea-level change, Past environments. £21 M of NERC funding since 2008. Geodynamics & Earth Resources Incorporates three strands Deep Earth processes, Crustal processes, Geoenergy & Mineral resources. £11 M of NERC funding since 2008. Carbon & Nutrient Cycling Incorporates three strands Changing Carbon cycle, Peatland dynamics, C Cycle stability & Nutrient cycling. £10 M of NERC funding since 2008. Hazards, Risk & Resilience Incorporates three strands Volcanoes, Earthquakes & Landslides, Fluvial Processes & Flooding, Environmental pollution & human health. £8.3 M of NERC funding since 2008. Biodiversity & Ecosystem Resources Incorporates two strands Evolution & Ecology and Resource sustainability & Environmental change biology. £13.2 M of NERC funding since 2008.

Studentship Projects Integrated Studentship Networks Innovation to support interdisciplinarity Networks of interrelated projects which will be supported to work collaboratively. • CASE studentships • at least 30% of awards need to go to CASE studentships • Projects • well-defined and deliverable proposals • methodology outlined, with RTSG needs detailed • Supervisory fit • Inter-institutional supervisory teams • Demonstrate expertise and experience • Research & training environment • Detail anticipated training needs • Highlight facilities equipment

Integrated Student Networks • Multidisciplinary in an embedded environment • Multidisciplinary training • Building a network, use NERC Centres, RO’s have Institutes e.g. IHRR, CeREES, DEI at DU), and others in partnership: SAGES, CRESS (SU), NIReS (NU), CESER (NU), CELO (StA) • ISNs will only proceed if students of sufficient quality emerge

Project & Student Selection • IAPETUS will run an open competition • Project & student selection based on excellence • Collaborative supervision • Training draws the best from each Partner • Timetable • Liaise with Academic & CASE Partners • Submit proposal form by 31st October 2013 • DTPs announced 4th November 2013 • Partnership meeting 12th November to screen for excellence and relevance to DTP Themes

Project & Student Selection • November 2013 - Projects advertised on IAPETUS website • Feb-March 2014 – Partners will nominate their best candidates to the Studentships Panel for funding • Jointly supervised students will not require joint registration • All academic staff will need to attend supervisor induction and training
