2. James Burbage • James Burbage was an Elizabethan entrepreneur born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England in 1531. • He built “The theatre” similar to the Roman amphitheatre, where elizabethan actors staged plays • Later, Burbage became an Elizabethan actor • Became the first man to obtain a theatrical license because he was very serious about his role as a theatrical entrepreneur and manager • People thought it was unusual to choose to be an actor because they were viewed as low people

Types of theaters: Globe Theatre: Blackfriar Theatre: • Created in 1596 • Provides roofing so the performances aren’t disrupted due to weather condition • Provides catering to the audiences who were wealthy and a higher class • Equipped with artificial lighting • Tickets to attend these plays were five times more expensive than public plays • Contained wiring to hang props and actors during performances • Created in 1599 • Built for an existing acting company • Reflected a globe because of the gathering of the crowd around the actors in town marketplaces • Staged in the afternoons to avoid using torches • 5 of the 20 bays were cut off by tiring house wall to store goods for the performances

4. Globe Theater history After 1599, the Globe Theatre is where all of Shakespeare’s plays were performed. It was constructed because Shakespeare was denied use of the Blackfriars Theatre, owned by James Burbage. The Blackfriars Theatre was blocked of use by the wealthier citizens of London and was then put out of business. Leaving just the Globe Theatre.

5. Globe Theatre Cont. Even though the original theatre was pulled down in 1644 by the Puritans due to higher standards of morality. Anewly constructed version of the Globe Theatre still stands on the waterfront today in London.

6. Audiences/ Atmosphere • All types of people went to The Globe Theater, from peasants to nobles • The prices varied from where you sat. If you sat in the pit with the peasant it would cost only one pound. • They were very involved in the play by clapping when the villain died and etc. However they dressed nicely • In the pit people brought food to throw at the actors. • There were no bathrooms so they either outside or where they stood. Due to this, it help in the spreading of the plague. • All actors were men • The queen never went to the theater
