  1. History Of Measurement By: Elaina Riedel and Cameron Gilbert

  2. Which civilizations were the first to record measurement? • Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia , Indus valley and Elam (Iran)

  3. What was the length of the foot based on? • An actual human foot.

  4. Why was the metric system created? • They needed an easier way to convert measurements.

  5. What was the “treaty of the meter”? • A document signed by 17 nations on may 20 1875. It established the weights and lengths of the improved metric system.

  6. How was the length of the standard meter defined in 1791? • The meter was to be equal to 1/10,000,000th of the length of the earths meridian along a quadrant through Paris that is the distance from the equator to the north pole.

  7. How was the meter redefined in 1983? • It was the distance traveled by light in absolute vacuum in 1/299.792.458 of a second.

  8. What was the significance of the Metric act of 1866. • It determined the modern definition of the metric system in the U.S.

  9. What were some of the early tools used to help aid in measurement? • Human body parts. ( feet, hands, fingers)

  10. What major engineering blunders were the results of faulty measurement? An air Canada flight was refueled in Toronto using litres instead of pounds of fuel. The pilot calculated how much he needed thinking he was getting his fuel in pounds and eventually ran out of fuel near Winnipeg. He successfully landed the plane safely at a semi abandoned WW2 airstrip at Gimli Manitoba.
