  3. PROJECT OBJECTIVES • Supporting staff involved in two surveys into employability perceptions amongst ESS Students. • Helping create the ESS employer database to aid the creation of an Employer Forum. • To contribute to the Schools Strategic Objectives on Employability.

  4. HOW DO WE BENEFIT AS INTERNS? • Gain experience of formal research activity within the HE Environment. • Gain experience of formal reporting and data management skills. • Improve communication skills and be able to successfully exchange information with staff in other Schools & Departments.

  5. ESS Database & Benefits to the School • All data held within one central location, allowing for information to be extracted with ease. • Allow the School to highlight employers via geographical location, sector & involvement with the School. • More importantly help to place students in contact with employers based on students’ course and career interests.

  6. How does the School of Education and Social Sciences Research link with Futures?

  7. Benefits • Both Futures and the ESS Project aim to achieve common goals, to: 1. Support EMPLOYABILITY and help students gain the most from university life. 2. Develop links with employers & other training establishments.

  8. The role of futures. • Helping students develop by allowing them to realise their potential in order to achieve future goals and aspirations. • Futures is for ALL regardless of degree study and level.

  9. What we Offer • Work experience • Enterprise workshops and seminars • Advise on careers and employability • Business start up and self employment opportunities • Plus much more…

  10. How can Futures benefit ESS Students • Preliminary report on findings suggested that students within the school lacked confidence in Business Skills. • The report also highlighted that students believed Work Experience& Communication Skills to be amongst the most important skills • By working in partnership with ESS, Futures can provide a tailored approach to help students gain access to a range of services, such as – • Helping students prepare for placement • Access to Realistic Work Environments • Electives & University Certificates

  11. Are Business Skills Important? Recently attended a talk presented by a number of employers. Employers highlighted that Soft Skills are important; The reality is they are seeing students with little Business awareness and believe this is a skill ALL STUDENTS should have. By highlighting this as a weakness in the Preliminary Report on findings the School can build upon improving employability of students and Futures can help support this.

  12. Conclusion • Preliminary Report on findings has proved beneficial in highlighting a number of key areas. • The School can now look at incorporating some key elements to courses. Giving students the best chances to achieve employment in an increasingly competitive job market. • By embedding employability into learning the School can benefit ALL students.
