  1. Life Science Review Period 1 Questions and Answers

  2. Science through Inquiry • Problem, Information, Hypothesis, Experiment, Data, Conclusions are the steps of the scientific method. • Eukaryotic cells have a nucleus while Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus. • Lab tools are: Forceps, Beaker, Scissors, Dissecting Tray, Pointer, Erlenmeyer flask, Graduated Cylinder

  3. Cell Theory and Cell Processes • Cell  Tissue  Organ  Organ System • 6CO2 + 6H2O  C6H12O6 + 6O2 • Active transport requires ENERGY while passive transport does NOT require energy (Ex. Diffusion and osmosis)

  4. Genetics 7. Sexual reproduction has TWO parents and produces genetically DIFFERENT offspring. -Asexual reproduction has ONE parent and produces genetically IDENTICAL offspring. 8. DNA is the genetic material that carries information about an organism and is passed from parent to offspring. 9. A Punnet square shows all of the combinations of alleles that can result from a genetic cross.

  5. Evolution and Natural Selection • Natural selection is the concept that the best adapted organisms will survive and reproduce. • Adaptations are traits that allow an organism to survive and reproduce. • Mimicry is when one organism imitates another. (Ex. Walking stick bug mimics twigs)

  6. Classification 13. A scientific name is written with the Genus capitalized, species lowercase, and both words underlined (Genusspecies) 14. Field guides and dichotomous keys are used to classify organisms. 15. Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.

  7. Simple Organisms 16. Slime Molds are in Kingdom Protista. 17. A virus is a nonliving particle that enters and reproduces inside a living cell. 18. Fungi are: -eukaryotes that have cells walls -are heterotrophs that feed by absorbing food -use spores to reproduce.

  8. Plant Kingdom • Eukaryotes are organisms whose cells HAVE a nucleus. • Photosynthesis is the process where plants produce food (C6H12O6) using carbon dioxide and water. • Chloroplasts are cell parts where plants make their own food.

  9. Animal Kingdom 22. Sharks belong to PHYLUM CHORDATA. 23. The word mammal comes from “mammary glands.” 24. A snake is a VERTEBRATE because it has a backbone.
