Topic: Introductions: Course Outline and Expectations • Introduction Activity • Take 2-3 minutes to jot down what comes to your mind, then in 5 or so minutes, discuss with your neighbour: • The last two weeks before this class • Upcoming practicum • Most important question that comes to mind about the next 4 months

Goals of the Course • to have prospective teachers understand the organization and administration of schools in British Columbia with particular reference to provincial governance in education and its relationship to and effect upon the roles of students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff and the community. • to familiarize students with school and classroom organizations and administration. • to acquaint students with how legislation, policies, and practices influence professional ethical decision-making. • to encourage students to explore educational, cultural and social issues in education and how these affect their professional lives. • to foster professional attitudes such as critical inquiry, reflection and self-assessment • to help students articulate the goals and values of their professional practice

Values Audit • On your own • Write down 5 – 10 of your core professional values • In groups of 2-4 share your list, interpreting the value(s) you chosee.g. what does respect mean to you • Your group will then find consensus on 4 or 5 values that you can all agree as your shared values. • Each person in your group will choose one of the shared values to write an action plan.e.g. Because we believe in demonstrating respect for all members of our school community, we will…..Make the action a concrete one. • Share your action statement with your colleagues in the group. Help each other to refine or clarify them. Choose one person from the group to be the reporter.
