  1. Building Blocks of Matter Science Grade 5 Chapter 1

  2. VocabularyChapter 1 • Element • Physical property • Chemical property • Atom • Atomic number • Molecule • Compound • Solution

  3. Element • Basic kind of matter • Pure • Only one type of atoms • Cannot be broken into smaller pieces by physical or chemical processes • Is in the periodic table

  4. Physical Properties • A property of material • A description • You can see, touch, smell, hear • You can measure it

  5. Chemical Properties • A property • A result of contact with other materials (change or no change) • Description of reaction

  6. Atom • Smallest particle of an element that has the same properties as the element • Include protons and neutrons (nucleus) and electrons • Elements are made of one type of atoms

  7. Atomic Number • Number of protons in a nucleus • The number found above the elemental symbol in the periodic table • Each element has a different atomic number • Single most important information of an element

  8. Molecule • Smallest part of a substance that has the same properties as the substance • Made from more than one atom • Can be made from one type of atoms (elements) or more two or more types of elements (compounds)

  9. Compound • Kind of matter • Made of more than two types of atoms • Not found in the periodic table • Combination of elements H2O

  10. Solution • Mixture • Can be separated • Substances are spread out evenly • Solute will not settle • Water is a universal solvent

  11. VocabularyChapter 1 • Element • Physical property • Chemical property • Atom • Atomic number • Molecule • Compound • Solution
