  2. Changing Velocity • A change in velocity can involve a change in either speed or direction-or both. • An object is accelerating when the object increases speed, decreases speed or changes direction.

  3. Calculating Acceleration • Acceleration describes the rate at which velocity changes. • To determine the acceleration of an object you must calculate its change in velocity per unit of time. • Acceleration=Final Velocity-Initial Velocity time

  4. SI unit for Acceleration is m/s/s=m/s2, if velocity is in m/s and time is in seconds. It will be Km/h/h=km/h2 if the velocity is in Km/h and the time is in hours. • Problem solving with acceleration pg 353 MATH PRACTICE • #s 1 and 2

  5. Acceleration Problems • 1. At point A, a runner is jogging at 3m/s. Forty seconds later, at point B, on a hill, the jogger’s velocity is only 1m/s. What is the jogger’s acceleration from point A to point B? • 2. In a summer storm, the wind is blowing with a velocity of 8m/s north. Suddenly, in 3 seconds, the wind’s velocity is 23 m/s north. What is the acceleration in the wind?

Graphing Acceleration • Check pages 354 and 355 • You can use both a speed-versus-time graph and a distance-versus-time graph to analyze the motion of an accelerating object. • Acceleration could be negative if the initial velocity is larger than final velocity in that case it is called deceleration.
