  1. TONIGHT’S AGENDAK- 5th Grade ~ Walk to Math • Walk to Math Program Model • Grade Level Math Standards/Curriculum • Assessments • Student Progress Reports • Classroom Instruction, Routines, Homework • Parent Resources

  2. Walk to Math Program Model • The concept behind Walk to Math is students receiving math instruction at their individual level. • We all know that students learn in different ways and at their own individual pace. Mathematics is unique in that math lessons often build on previous math skills and concepts. If students have not mastered the previous skills and concepts, they are often confused and have difficulty mastering the new. • Our goal for this program is to master all of their grade level math skills before they enter the next grade level.

  3. Walk to Math • Currently, grades 3 – 5 are “walking”. • Walking occurs Monday – Thursday. Fridays math is taught in the students regularly assigned classroom. • There is a 5th/6th grade classroom. • LH is working with middle schools, such as Whitman, to help students transition at the correct level of mastery. • LH will not be teaching over 6th grade level math. • LH may have “walking” for 2nd grade & lower this year. The data is being evaluated. • LH students first started “walking” midway through last year. This is a relatively new program and work in progress.

  5. Grade Level Math Standards/Curriculum Each month, or unit, teachers will focus on teaching several math standards using the district-adopted curriculum Everyday Math (EDM). After a teacher finishes the unit, the students will be given an end of the unit EDM assessment to check student understanding. In addition to the unit test, teachers administer standard based “check-points" (usually 3 problems) to ensure student mastery on previously taught standards. These “check-points” are cumulative - ensuring mastery on all previously taught standards.

  8. Core Processes Problem Solving/Reasoning and Communication PLAN: 1. What is the Question?(Identify the question) 2. What is the important information? Do we need more information? 3. What strategies could you use to solve the problem? DO: 1. Use one or more strategies to solve the problem. 2. Show your work using objects, words, pictures, numbers or symbols. 3. Identify answer in a complete sentence. REVIEW: 1. Describe how you solved the problem. 2. Is your answer reasonable? (Does your answer make sense?) 3. Explain Summarize-- Defend your answer.

  9. A Balanced Math Program A well-balanced mathematics program includes: • Conceptual understanding • Procedural proficiency • Mathematical processes

  13. Assessments should be…….STANDARDS - based Jonny received an 80% on Chapter 1 Assessment. Question still remains: How does Jonny really understand the standard “adding fractions”? Standard 1 Standard 2 Total Score Student 1 2 10 12 Student 2 10 2 12 Student 3 6 6 12

  14. EDM Assessments Washington State has adopted a new set of core math principles. The Seattle School District has reviewed and rewritten the EDM assessments to align with the state. Overall, the state core principles focus on learning less standards, but to learn mastery of those standards.

  20. Student Progress Reports

  21. Student Progress Reports • Student progress reports will be sent home approximately every 6 weeks. • Meeting, approaching, or below standard are the grades. Exceeding standard will no longer be used. • Standards listed are ones student should have met by now, not by the end of the year. • Standards listed have been covered in class this year or previous years. The standards will be reviewed during small groups days once a week as needed. Class lessons move on to new standards. • If your student is approaching or below standard, you can help by providing practice at home. Resources to follow.

  23. MATH CLASS ROUTINESDAILY “CHECKPOINTS” • One Day a Week: • Problem SolvingAPPLY • Specific math skills and concepts through problem solving, reasoning and communication One Day a Week: Learning Groups PRACTICE REVIEW-ENRICH Specific math skills, concepts and computation Three Days a Week Teach NewConcepts and Skills

  24. Learning Groups TEACHER: Long Division Instruction TUTOR: Comparing Fractions Game Problem Solving Activity Enrichment Activity

  25. Learning Groups • The previous slide was an example for that week. • Students will rotate between groups, based on how they are performing the current standard. • Tutors will help any students the teacher recommends. • Tutors may work with a group that needs more practice on a standard, or may work with the enrichment group.

  26. TONIGHT’S AGENDAK- 5th Grade ~ Walk to Math • Walk to Math Program Model • Grade Level Math Standards • Assessments • Student Progress Reports • Classroom Routines and Homework • Parent Resources

  27. Parent Resources • Every student should bring home a Family Letter at the beginning of each new chapter. Keep this letter nearby to refer to during the chapter. • EDM on-line follows the EDM lessons taught in class, plus practice, family letters, and more. • IXL may be assigned as homework. The teacher can tell what students logged in, what they worked on, and for how long. If your student doesn’t not have access to the internet, please let the teacher know. • Math Connects workbooks will be available to every child, 2nd – 5th grade. The student will get to bring them home and write in them. After more data comes in, they may be purchased for K and/or 1st.
