    6. How can the Family Readiness Program help me? The Family Readiness Program assists the families of Marines and Sailors in several ways: 1. Family Readiness- The Family Readiness Program’s number one mission is to enhance family readiness for the deployment, and does so by creating programs, readiness packets, and social events designed to make the separation caused by deployment a little easier to bear. 2. Keeping you informed- While the units are deployed and home, the Family Readiness Program is the means by which families receive all official messages from the command. The ways of communication are: Quarterly Newsletter MOL Communication Tool Website http://www.marines.mil/unit/2ndmardiv/6thmarreg/2-9/Pages/HomeDefault.aspx Facebook (underdevelopment) 800-230-8762 (press 2 then 5) Email Distribution list – Need your Marine or Sailor to give us your address

    7. How can the Family Readiness Program help me? 3.  Providing the voice of experience- Volunteers know the ins and outs of military living, and possess the knowledge to help other families through the difficult deployment 4.  Information Referral Services- Looking for a way to get involved with other spouses with children or similar interests?  Your designated Family Readiness Volunteer will gladly refer you to the endless resources that are made available to military families. 5.  A support system- Remember, you are not alone as military families, we are part of a unique community and in a profound way - we are a family unto ourselves.  Any problem you may be facing has no doubt been met and overcome by another family member and the Family Readiness Program provides the means for their experience to benefit you.

    9. Deployment Guide & Checklist In front of you have a pre-deployment packet. This should include a Singles Deployment guide, Checklist, and OneSource card. Deployment Guide - The majority of what I am covering in this guide will be discussed in this brief. Please use this guide as a reference and read to prepare for your deployment. This pre-deployment guide is not just for pre-deployment, it is for general readiness. Checklist - As you think about getting ready for your deployment, there are things that you must ensure are taken care of during your deployment. How many of you have received a checklist of items that you need to prepare to take with you on the deployment? As you prepare for your deployment on the military side, there are things that you will need to take care of on your personal side as well. How many of you have at least one bill that you have to pay; a vehicle that you have to take care of? Who takes care of these items now? How will they be taken care of while you are gone? When you do something over and over, it becomes routine. However, things are constantly changing. This deployment checklist is a helpful tool to make sure you have taken care of all personal items that need to still take care of during the deployment. Military OneSource – How many of you have used Military OneSource? It is a great resource for you. You can access it over the internet or via the phone 24 hours a day. If you need information about any topic: Free online tax preparation, stress management, local resources, or any other topic, use OneSource to research the topic and provide you the information that you are looking for at no expense. Military OneSource can also provide face to face counseling services with an off base provider at no charge to the Marine. For more information call OneSource. 42. 1. COC immediately declares River City to prevent unofficial misinformation. COC confirms the facts. Generate Personnel Casualty Report (PCR). 4. Submit PCR to HQMC. 5. HQMC notifies Instructor-Inspector (I-I) CONUS command nearest PNOK and SNOK. 6. I-I/RBE identifies Casualty Assistance Calls Officer (CACO). CACO notifies family, in person whenever possible. 44. Myths and Truths “She’ll be able to pay the funeral expenses as soon as we get her the death gratuity check” Death Gratuity is for immediate living expenses, Military Medical Support Office pays for funeral expenses for active duty deaths. “Look sir, all you have to do is look on the RED, it tells you exactly who the Primary next of kin is.” Primary next of kin is determined utilizing the family structure (Spouse) on the Record of Emergency Data “ We don’t need to go into admin, we can change our beneficiaries on MOL.” You can only change death gratuity or pay arrears beneficiaries during an in-person admin audit and not on MOL.

    49. Family Care Plans “The member is responsible for the care of family members during deployments and temporary duty, as at all other times.” Identify a caregiver (short-term / long-term) Who will be caring for your children? Short-term when spouse is injured and husband is deployed…Keep in mind it will take time get your husband home. Long-term; both are deployed at the same time? It happens. Make financial arrangements Who will be managing the finances and paying the bills? POA? Review logistical issues Is your POV operational, safety inspection current through deployment? Plan for contingencies / exigencies Murphy’s Law; What could go wrong, will go wrong and it always seems to happen when your Marine/Sailor deploys.

    50. Estate Planning What happens to your property after you die? Someone is going to get your stuff, ensure it goes to who you desire to have it. Help you family avoid the ugliness. Everyone should have an estate plan. Make life easier on your family after your death. The plan is important for other family members. Do you have a Spouse or Children Do you own property; name on deed? A Last Will and Testament is just one part of your estate plan. Do you or your spouse have Living Wills?
