  2. INTRODUCTION • We are all fighting an ongoing and continuous battle against fire. According to the United States Fire Administration (USFA), 81 percent of all fire deaths and 76 percent of all fire injuries occurred in homes. Each year there is an estimated: (CA as reported to CAIRS) • 365,500 home fires (2011 California – 7620 reported residential) • 2,560 deaths (2011 California – 116 total, 75 residential) • 13,275 injuries • $6.6 billion in property loss (2011 California - $438,663,750 property/contents loss)

  3. What is FIEF? A national action plan for fire prevention and protection An initiative to bring together the power of many A partnership with the United States Fire Administration Focused on two key fire issues

The Goal Fires can be prevented and everyone has a role to play in ensuring they are prevented. “Fire is Everyone’s Fight” will use a wide range of resources to communicate the importance of taking action to protect ourselves and the people we love from the dangers of fire. The message is clear, concise and consistent. Presented over and over and over and over….

  5. FIEF Objectives “Fire is Everyone’s Fight” is designed to get every man, woman, and child thinking about the importance of fire prevention. Specific objectives are to help people across the nation: • Move from viewing home fires as unavoidable accidents to understanding that they can be prevented • Learn the actions they can take to prevent home fires, particularly cooking fires. • Install smoke alarms and keep them in good working order.

FIEF Strategy IT TAKES EVERYONE TO FIGHT FIRE Some organizations and individuals with whom USFA foresees working hand-in-hand to promote “Fire is Everyone’s Fight” include: • Members of the Fire Service and Emergency Medical Services • Advocacy and Nonprofit Organizations • Amusement Parks/Large Corporate Centers • Appliance and Cookware Manufacturers • Community/Recreation Centers • Faith-based Organizations • Homeowners and Renters (Individuals/Families) • Homeowners Associations and Property Managers • Local/State Governments and Civic Associations • Multicultural Organizations • Property Insurers • Professional Sports • Property Insurers • Schools (Public/Private—all levels) • Senior Centers and Organizations

  7. Resources The “Fire is Everyone’s Fight” initiative will have a strong online presence that enables organizations and the public to refer to and download key initiative information. The initiative will be housed on USFA’s website at http://www.usfa.fema.gov/. Visitors of the initiative webpage will also be invited to visit: • The Prevention and Publication Education Exchange (PARADE), to find national, state, and local fire prevention and life safety practices and public education materials • Vision 20/20 Project • Links to partner organizations and materials.

  8. Putting together the message What is the Vision 20/20 Project? A project committed to action, key strategic recommendations, a national plan, key stakeholders to support, documentation specific actions and benchmarks. KEY WORD - ACTION • The 5 Strategies – Prevention Advocacy, Prevention Marketing, Prevention Culture, Prevention Technology, Prevention Codes and Standards • Strategy 2 – Prevention Marketing using two core messages

  9. Two Core Messages The messages are based on national fire data. • Residential fires still lead in fire injuries and deaths. • Leading Cause – Cooking fires • Lacking fire safety device – Smoke alarms

  10. Strategy 2 What do we have ? • A cooking message. • Fits into the NFPA 2013 Fire Prevention Week theme • Working on the “spokes folks” • In 2011, California reported 7256 cooking fires. November had the highest number with December second in line.
