Impact of Citizenship Acquisition on Employment of Male Migrants: European Study

This study explores the relationship between citizenship acquisition and paid employment of male migrants in Europe. It analyzes data from 24,391 first-generation male migrants, aged 20-65, in EU countries and Switzerland, excluding Finland. The study finds a positive relation between citizenship and employment, especially in Germany, Spain, France, and Sweden. However, this relation is weaker for migrants with lower educational attainment and differs based on the origin country. Migrants with secured jobs before migration show a negative relation between citizenship and employment. The study concludes that speed of citizenship acquisition is positively related to employment, and this association is strongest for migrants from EU, EFTA, and North America.
