  2. BOOF • The Betting On Our Future (BOOF) media campaign is youth based and intended to empower young people to raise awareness of problem gambling and how it affects young people

  3. Betting On Our Future • Established 2007 • Over 70 funded projects • 2012-2013: 19 funded project sites in 13 counties throughout CA

  5. YOUTH PROBLEM GAMBLING Current research shows that parents, educators, & other adults should consider the potential pitfalls of problem gambling among young people. For instance, teen problem gamblers tend to have higher rates of: LEGAL & MONEY TROUBLES RISK FOR ATOD ADDICTION CRIME SCHOOL PROBLEMS SUICIDAL THOUGHTS & ATTEMPTS FAMILY PROBLEMS PEER RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS DISSOCIATIVE “ESCAPE” BEHAVIORS DEPRESSION

BOOF & Beyond • 2 years of research through the BOOF program has allowed youth participants to look at the implications of predatory lending to problem gamblers in Daly City. • BOOF participants feel that policies should be passed to limit where Payday lenders can operate. • Next Steps: Youth are working with elected officials in Daly City to pass a Model Ordinance Policy. • BOOF films will be shared to mobilize community residents about problem gambling and predatory lending.

BOOF & Beyond • The National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) was invited to speak at our annual youth BOOF conference. • The NEFE High School Financial Planning Program helps young people turn financial education in to real actions that result in positive habits. • BOOF youth now have additional tools and resources to share with their peers and family members who may be facing financial hardships due to problem gambling.

  15. BOOF & Beyond • Linkage to other systems and opportunities: • Internships at CFNLP & Royer Studios • Participation in the Teen Truth Live Film Festival for national recognition of their BOOF work. • It’s Complicated PSA contest & other opportunities to share their creativity & new skill set.
