  1. Culling Elephants Marc Di Cola Matt Blakeslee

  2. What is Culling? • Culling is the removing or killing of surplus animals • Animals that get culled: • Male chickens • Elk • And Elephants

  3. Why cull animals? • The main reason for culling animals is to keep populations under control • Another reason for culling animals is farmers may not have a use for extra males other than breeding so they will kill them to make room.

  4. South African Elephants • Since the ban on Ivory trade, elephant populations started to rise • Now that their population grew, Elephants are causing more problems then ever • They wander on to farms and damage crops, sometimes kill people, and even threaten the survival of other species

  5. Lifting the Ban • The South African government decided to lift the ban on killing elephants in order to keep control of the population • The IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare) continues to insist the culling is "cruel, unethical, and scientifically unsound", but the WWF (formerly the World Wildlife Fund) says it is "the most viable immediate population-reduction tool".

  6. Different ways to cull • Elephants may be culled by shooting them. • Powerfull muscle relaxants are also used before they are shot. • Vasectomies are also performed, but it is hard to keep track of elephants. • Birth control can be used, but the steroids make the elephants more aggressive.

  7. Pros Birth control reduces populations and can be used remotely without immobilization Cons Birth control doesn’t reduce populations, just birth rates. Expensive Need to use on both males and females Pros and Cons of Culling
