  1. Comparison Chart English system 􀁡 length: inches, feet 􀁡 mass: ounces, lbs 􀁡 Volume: pints, gallons 􀁡 temp: °F Metric system 􀁡 length: meters 􀁡 mass: kilograms 􀁡 volume: liters 􀁡 temp: °C, °K

  2. Metric Units-Ex 1.1 • Conversion of metric units and expression • in scientific notation .. • k h da base d c m μ n p are pre-fix symbols • gram, liter, meter are units in metric • Using prefix will help in metric conversions • Eg. Kg is kilogram unit for weight • Kl is kilolitre fo volume • Km is kilometer for distance 􀁡

  3. Ex 1.2 • Length • 􀁡Take meter stick and identify: • 􀁠m, dm, cm, mm. • Calculate lab book, lab partner, index finger • 􀁡Area = length x width • Calculate Area for lab book • 􀁡Dime measurement: thickness is 1 mm • 􀁠measure one dime, calculate the rest

  4. Volume-Ex 1.3 • 􀁡Pure water: • 1cc = 1ml = 1g 1dm3 = 1L = 1Kg • 􀁡glassware, identify and know how to read markings on: • 􀁠beakers • 􀁠graduated cylinders • 􀁠graduated pipettes • 􀁠Erlenmeyer flasks

  5. Volume cont. • meniscus (water’s adhesive property) • 􀁡 pipette filling device - pump • 􀁡know which pipette size is best for specified volumes • Eg 5 ml is for measuring 4.5 ml • 2ml is for 1.7 ml

  6. MassEx .1.4 • Know how to use: • 􀁠triple beam balance- for measuring Beaker, Lab book • 􀁠electronic scale-for measuring light weights eg paper clip • Bathroom scale-for measuring yourself • 􀁡Measure mass of volume of water using this equation: • 1ml = 1gm = 1dm3

  7. Temperature-Ex 1.5 • Temperature • 􀁡At sea level: • 􀁠freezing point = 0°C 32°F • 􀁠boiling point = 100°C 212°F • Determine temperature of four water baths in °C • and convert to °F. Convert real life applications. • Hot plate is used to boil water,Use tongs .. • 􀁡 • Know formulas for temperature conversions • °F = 9/5 °C + 32 • 􀁡 °C = 5/9 (°F – 32) • 􀁡 Kelvin scale (K) • 􀁠0°K is absolute zero, all molecular motion • ceases • 􀁠0°K = -273°C so °K = °C + 273 7

  8. Statistical TermsEx1.6 • Mean : average of measurements • 􀁡Median : middle value • 􀁡Range : the smallest to largest values • 􀁡Deviation : + or – from the mean • 􀁡Variance : sum of deviations2 • 􀁡Std. Deviation : sq.root of variance

  9. Ex 1.7 Graphs • Graphs are used to help you to visualise data • Refer to page 21 for data • Graph on page 22

  10. Scientific Notation • Expression of numbers by using powers of 10 • 1000.0 is 1 x 103 • .000010 is 1X 10-5

  11. Medical Importance • Medical calculations -Usage of this is in hospitals when drug dosages are calculated.. • If 30 mg of drug is to be given to 1kg of patient, his weight is 100 pounds. What dosage should you administer? • Answer:1Kg is 2.21 pds ,so 100 pds will be • 100/2.21 = 45.24 kg • So the dosage would be 30x45.24 kg =1357mg
