  8. Important historical or current figure • EladioDieste • December 10, 1917 – July 29, 2000 • Architect • Built grain silos, factory sheds, churches, and markets • All of those things were important because of Uruguay having a lot of agriculture • Had a certain Technique: Reinforced Masonry

  9. Three significant issues in the country • Smuggling of Drugs • Smuggling of Firearms • Those are not good for the economy and relations with other governments • Water pollution • Uruguay does food processing which pollutes the water, hazardous disposal also pollutes the water

  10. One important cultural feature • Candombe (Afro-Uruguayan rhythm) • Came from the African routes in Uruguay • Involves tambores which are drums, tambor piano, tamborchico, and tamborrepique • Very popular within Uruguay • Internationally known

  11. Relations with US • Friendly • Trade with US still today • US helps with Uruguay’s army (training and weapons)
