    4. Professional Standards What are they? Where did they come from? Who are they for? How are they used and by whom?

    5. Professional standards for primary principals “The professional standards set out in this schedule have been drawn from the Kiwi Leadership for Principals document and educational leadership best evidence. They provide a baseline for assessing satisfactory performance within each area of practice. They form part of a principal’s performance agreement, which will reflect the school / board goals, the principal’s job description, and more specific objectives.” (MOE Educational Leaders website)

    6. Professional standards for primary principals “Included in the development of the performance agreement will be the identification and development of appropriate indicators. The performance agreement must also include New Zealand Teachers Council criteria for registration as a teacher.” “Part 4 of the Primary Principals’ Collective Agreement describes the responsibility of the employing board to develop the principal’s performance agreement.” (MOE Educational Leaders website)

    9. Area of Practice CULTURE Provide professional leadership that focuses the school culture on enhancing learning and teaching.

    10. Cont’d PEDAGOGY Create a learning environment in which there is an expectation that all students will experience success in learning.

    11. And here’s the third SYSTEMS Develop and use management systems to support and enhance student learning.

    12. Finally! PARTNERSHIPS and NETWORKS Strengthen communication and relationships to enhance student learning. Note: Principals with teaching responsibilities will also need to meet the requirements of current (of the time) standards and/or criteria for teachers

    13. The Professional Standards Culture: Provide professional leadership that focuses the school culture on enhancing learning and teaching. In conjunction with the board, develop and implement a school vision and shared goals focused on enhanced engagement and achievement for all students. Promote a culture whereby staff members take on appropriate leadership roles and work collaboratively to improve teaching and learning. etc

    14. Activity Look through the handout of Professional Standards and note the Areas of Practice and the associated Professional Standards. In pairs take four Professional Standards and write ‘Indicators’ for them. Using the next handout, note what sources of evidence you might be expected to provide for your appraiser.

    15. Activity Work through the handout and assess yourself using the Modelling, Developing and Needing Assistance columns. Select one standard (or more) that you need to work on and write down some some ways you could do this. Discuss with your neighour.

Principal’s Appraisal The Board, as employer, is responsible and accountable for the principal’s appraisal The Board must consult the principal… Sufficient resourcing needs to be allocated Agreement needs to happen over appraiser choice Contract needs to be agreed to Check the school policy on principal appraisal
