  2. Why do we need to take in fluid? • We need to take in fluids to replace lost water and salt • There are many ways in which we can take in fluid • Remember fluid can be taken in in the food we eat as well as what we drink

  3. How do we know we need to take on board more water? • We feel thirsty • Normally it is too late once we feel thirsty – we are already dehydrated • How many cups of water should we consume on average every day? - we should consume 2 litres of water every dayto keep our body hydrated

  4. Salty Water • If we need to replace salt, can we drink salty water?

  5. Salty Water Activity • You are going to simulate the effect of salty water on our cells using a carrot • Follow your instructions carefully

  6. Conclusions • If our cells were placed in salty water they would lose their internal water to try to dilute the salt. • We would then lose more water and become dehydrated • Therefore we cannot drink salty water to replace lost fluid
