  2. National Hydrography Dataset • Nationally integrated, seamless, dataset of surface water features. • Network • Classification • Names • Inventory (National Identifier) REACH Code • Lineage • The NHD is the hydrography layer of the National Map

  3. Current NHD Status • Medium Res. available Nationwide (1:100K-Scale) • High Res. available for 80% of Nation (1:24K-Scale + 1:63K-Scale AK ) • Partners: EPA, USFS, NPS, and States. • National coverage to be completed in 2006 • Local Res. available for Vermont (>1:24K-Scale) • North Carolina – local res. from LIDAR • West Virginia – 1:4800 hydro source

  4. Phases of the NHD • Initial Collection • Based on available sources • Refinement • Based on completing the Network • Maintaining Currency • Updating - Based on local knowledge • Revision

NHD Maintenance • Goal – keep NHD data synchronized with national holdings • Managed as National Repository in GeoDatabase • Feature based transactional updates • Looking for partners, data stewards • Examples: Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York • Develop and use common tools • Training kits and user documentation
