  1. COLLATION OF MAGS STAFF ERO REVIEW COMMENTS JOHN PIPE

  2. MILESTONES • I am suggesting that we set up targets and goals over a three-year period that do two things: • 1. Align what we do with our strategic plan (and the 5 year teacher development plan) • 2. Align what we do with the timeline of the next ERO review.

  3. We need to focus on goals that will address both of the above. • BIG IDEAS FROM LAST REVIEW • ACHIEVEMENT - Milestone yearly TARGET IDEA • UNDERACHIEVEMENT - Milestone yearly TARGET IDEA • STUDENT VOICE Milestone sub-group of SMT gather info FEEDBACK GOAL • MAGS WAY Milestone - link to new curriculum • BEHAVIOUR - Milestone - other initiatives will help eg Resilience • DISCIPLINE - Milestone - other initiatives will help • ENGAGEMENT Milestone - other initiatives will help: THINKING, CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING • DIFFERENTIATION Milestone - other initiatives will help: THINKING, CO-OPERATIVE LEARNING • DATA - Milestone - REGULAR PART OF WHAT WE DO • INITIATIVES - Milestone • EVALUATION OF PROGRAMMES Milestone • COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Milestone FEEDBACK • PASIFIKA Milestone ALL THREE GOALS • ICT - Milestone ALL THREE GOALS • CLASS SIZES - Milestone • TEACHING - Milestone ALL THREE GOALS • ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS - Milestone EVALUATION

  4. ACHIEVEMENT - milestone Direct link to underachievement … The target should include those students who are failing

  5. UNDERACHIEVEMENT - milestone • This was based on 2006 data 2007 data needs to be factored (another reason to set targets in the New Year) • Can we look at our successful students and see what they do as models for those who are underachieving? ie a RESILIENCE model? • Peer tutoring Y13 of Y11? • Academic Institute Y13 meet with Y10 and Y9

  6. STUDENT VOICE Milestone • Where can students have an opportunity to have their say? • Student council, student newspaper, myclasses, environment group, feedback to teachers, prefects, organising events (Fluoro Days), Music, Performing Arts, Forums • How can we put structures in place? Student Council? ‘The Roar’? myclasses? Special Groups?

  7. MAGS WAY milestone • Perhaps the MAGS Way is a vehicle for increased student voice? Eg Respect the Environment could be a vehicle for students to have their voice heard. • Each MAGS Way principle can be given to students to develop

  8. BEHAVIOUR - milestone • Good example of differing perceptions by staff about behaviour - probably needs to be unpacked further - paticularly in the light of the next slide …. • If we benchmark the negative comments and try the positive strategies, these sorts of feedback can be gathered again

  9. DISCIPLINE - Milestone This links to BEHAVIOUR to the MAGS WAY, to student engagement and to motivation.

  10. ENGAGEMENT milestone • I suggest three things in 2008 • Thinking - Term 1 • Co-operative Learning - Term 2 • Feedback - Term 3 • I believe that we can measure some base line data with staff as far as their classroom activites are concerned. This data can be gahtered at a staff meeting but staff need to be able to unpack the questions first. A mixture of closed and open responses. This same tool can be used to measure staff post the PD

  11. DIFFERENTIATION milestone How long can ‘one size fit all’ work for all lessons? Differentiation can occur through COURSE DESIGN, CONTENT, PROCESS or OUTCOME Perhaps the Thinking tools are the way to differentiate? Eg Thinking maps, Think-Its, Thinkers’ Keys are all ways that demand different approaches ERO are going to ask us what we are doing for our Gifted and talented as well as our Pasifika students

  12. INITIATIVES - milestone The Manuka classes need to be to a certain extent experimental

  13. DATA - milestone Excellent comments particularly when we add how much we have learnt about asttle this year. Data gathering project with local Intermediate schools The most important question is; What is the purpose of gathering data?

  14. EVALUATION OF PROGRAMMES milestone using baseline data, during and at milestone points Some links to DATA gathering If we make changes we need to measure them and know how to do that before we start.

  15. FEEDBACK to staff goal this year milestone These are all positives but ….. Do individual teachers need some techniques? Links to data gathering techniques in an NCEA environment and also … links to student voice if you consider a range of different types of data: Feedback Surveys, Questionnaires, Qualitative, Quantitative, Ach. Std results

  16. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT milestone This is a big issue when we consider the number of comments MAGS Parents links

  17. PASIFIKA 1 milestone

  18. PASIFIKA 2 milestone

  19. PASIFIKA 3 - milestone We already have links to Pasifika parents and Pasifika teachers. We need to build on these.

  20. ICT 1 milestone

  21. ICT 2 milestone These link to a wide range of the other headings. Already an ICT strategic group has been suggested

  22. ICT 3 - milestone

  23. CLASS SIZES - milestone Clearly a concern for some teachers What does research say? Dale’s paper interesting but important to keep in mind the other pressures that we place on staff who teach five sets of 30 in a class

  24. STUDENT CENTRE/GUIDANCE - milestone? This was impressive feedback How do we build from here?

  25. TEACHING milestone Can coaching and mentoring be a model to use? Can we observe each other more? Can we give each other more feedback?

  26. MOTIVATION Links to a whole raft of the other headings

  27. ALTERNATIVE PATHWAYS
