  5. Present All practice Christianity, but still have traditional ceremonies. A traditional ritual for the Cherokee Indians is the going down to the water ritual. Go to church as any other person would. Religion • Past • Did not view the Earth as it's mother. • The word Cherokee means principle people or people of god. • Cherokee people only adored the one great spirit

Present Pottery still made from black clay-different types of glaze and paints for color Baskets still made from same materials as in the past but...dyes include butternut, yellow root, and sedge for brighter colors Pottery and Baskets • Past • Pottery made from black clay -crushed shells, mica, and plants for color • Baskets made from river cane, white oak, honey suckle, & hickory bark -dyes were only black walnut and blood root

  7. Present live in houses much like us today Live throughout the United States Some choose to live on reservations Housing Past • winter and summer houses • Houses as hard as log cabins • lived in villages near rivers or lakes
