  1. FAMILY VIOLENCE IN WORLD PERSPECTIVE SOCIOLOGY 697 EMPHASES OF THE COURSE A SOCIOLOGY COURSE – I WILL EMPHASIZE THE SOCIAL CAUSES & EFFECTS. BUT PSYCHOLOGY IS NOT SLIGHTED. TEXT IS BY PSYCHOLOGISTS A RESEARCH EXPERIENCE COURSE – LAB PROJECTS TO TEST THEORIES WORLD PERSPECTIVE – THE LAB PROJECTS WILL USE DATA FROM THE INTERNATIONAL DATING VIOLENCE STUDY CORPORAL PUNISHMENT BY PARENTS (“SPANKING”) BECAUSE IT IS THE PRIMORDIAL VIOLENCE GENDER DIFFERENCES IN VICTIMIZATION AND PERPETRATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST PARTNERS BECAUSE FEMINIST THEORY THAT MAINTENANCE OF MALE DOMINANCE IS THE MOST WIDELY ACCEPTED EXPLANATION

  2. REVIEW OF SYLLABUS CLASS MEETINGS • USUALLY TWO PARTS • A LECTURE • A LAB PROJECT OR VIDEO • DURING LECTURES • RAISE QUESTIONS • ASK FOR FURTHER INFORMATION • ALSO AT THE END OF LECTURES, I WILL ASK YOU TO WRITE AND TURN IN QUESTIONS

  3. TERMINOLOGY AND DEFINITIONS • AGGRESSION An act carried out with the INTENTION of harming another person • Physical • Psychological • Social • Sexual • Material • RELATED TERMS • VIOLENCE • ABUSE • MALTREATMENT

  4. VIOLENCE IS ALSO USED TO REFER TO ANY FORM OF MALTREATMENT OR ABUSE. • SOMETIMES APPLIED TO ANYTHING SOMEONE DOES NOT LIKE: • MARKETING INFANT FORMULAS • CLEAR-CUTTING FORESTS • CONFLICT AND VIOLENCE ARE NOT THE SAME • CONFLICT IS AN INHERE T PART OF HUMAN INTERACTION • VIOLENCE IS ONE METHOD OF RESOLVING A CONFLICT

  5. WHAT IS FAMILY VIOLENCE? • AT LEAST 25 KINDS OF FAMILY VIOLENCE • ANY MALTREATMENT OR "ABUSE" OF A FAMILY MEMBER • Behavior Family Victim • Physical abuse Child • Sexual abuse Dating Partner • Psychological abuse Spouse • Neglect Parent • Theft, embezzlement, etc Elderly family member • 5 ABUSIVE BEHAVIORS X 5 TYPES OF VICTIMS = 25 KINDS OF FAMILY VIOLENCE

  6. IF BY ITSELF: An act carried out with the intention of causing another person to experience physical pain or injury. • This is the more scientific usage. • IF "FAMILY VIOLENCE" Any form of maltreatment of another family member. I WILL USE "VIOLENCE" IN TWO WAYS Violence Has Many Dimensions Minor and Severe Instrumental and Expressive Criminal and Legitimate IDENTIFY EXAMPLES OF EACH A person can escape being touched and it is still violence/physical aggression (An act carried out with the INTENTION of harming another person) Victims point of view is only relevant for understanding the response to violence

  7. WHAT MAKES A BEHAVIOR ABUSE? HARM CAUSED This is often harm assumed CULTURAL NORMS Child labor Child sex Beating the devil out of them Toughening a child "Physically chastise an errant wife" Spank child 7-year olds as caregivers of infants and toddlers

  8. OTHER POINTS ON AGGRESSION/VIOLENCE • Anger • Not the same as aggression • It is an emotion that sometimes leads to aggression • Is aggression/violence is morally right or wrong? • Some aggressive acts are and some are not • Depends on the cultural norms of the society • "Spanking" children versus "slapping" a wife • "Executing" a criminal versus "killing" a rival • Other examples of "legitimate violence" • Aggression is not the same as intense effort or activity • Example: An "aggressive' salesman or base ball player • Not aggression because no intent to harm • If the player does attempt to injure another player, then in that instance • This is a public usage, not a scientific usage
