  1. SHARC DSPs • SHARC is a DSP architecture designed and fabricated by Analog Devices, Inc. • As of Spring 2005, they manufacture and sell 22 DSPs based on the SHARC • Price is $10/unit (qty 10,000) - $200/unit

SHARC features • Common features include: • 32/40-bit IEEE floating point math • No arithmetic pipeline (single cycle exec) • Circular buffer addressing in hardware • Six nested levels of zero-overhead looping • ISA has several DSP specific operations • DMA allows zero-overhead background transfer for sustained memory access

  3. SHARC features • Varied features include: • Clock speed (40-400MHz), package type • MMACs (40-800) • Voltage (1.2-5v) • On-chip ROM (0-16 Mbits) and SRAM (0.5-16 Mbits) • Ports (serial, SPDIF, DAI) • Sample rate converters

  4. SHARC ISA • Instruction set includes: • Min, max, clip operations • Abs operations • Up to 3 inst/word (MAC, MAA, etc.) • Post-increment and looped addressing • Saturation arithmetic
