  3. Optical Burst Switching • Control and data information travel separately on different channels • Data coming from legacy networks are aggregated into a burst unit in edge node • The control packet is sent first in order to reserve the resources in intermediate nodes • The burst follows the control packet with some offset time, and it crosses the nodes remaining in the optical domain OBS node Reserv. manager OBS network Switching times:ms ÷ s Assembly manager Burst size: kB ÷ MB Control channels offset Data channels ... Legacy networks WDM links Out-of-band signal.

  4. Objectives • To analyze network architectures and routing strategies for OBS • To investigate contention resolution schemes, together with reservation and scheduling techniques. • In parallel, to examine traffic modeling issues, including influence of burstification algorithms and self-similarity. • To study OBS service provisioning aspects and TCP over OBS issues • To investigate design alternatives for OBS edge and core routers, including physical devices for OBS networks. • To study dependability, protection and restoration issues.

  17. Methodology for integration • Contact other partners with a common interest • Team up with other partners as a result of the interaction in 1 • Produce a very brief joint task proposal: • Name of the joint task • Participants • Timetable • Intended submission goal and deadline. (teaching materials, joint master/PhD thesis, etc). • Such proposal will be announced in the JP webpage in order to give a chance for other partners to join. • Then, a final list will be approved by the JP advisory board, which will monitor the activity of each of the joint tasks

  18. Template for Joint Activities • Name of joint task: • Participants: • Responsible person (please include email): • Description (max 1 page): • Targeted call for papers (please include hyperlink) • Deadline

  19. Proposal for budget allocation • There are 70 Keuros to fund joint activities within the JP. • The proposals for joint tasks will be collected in an “open call” basis. • Two funding periods: • Proposals submitted in the first 8 months of the project • Proposals submitted in the second 8 months of the project. • At the end of the first and second year funds will be transferred upon presentation of a receipt of submission. • Algorithm: If your joint activity is successful you can count with 0.8 * X / N where X is the JP money and N the number of successful activities. • 20% of the JP money is reserved for activties needing extra funds: for instance publication of more than one paper. • The overall objective is to promote integration with the available funds, and to give an opportunity to every partner to get a share of the available funds with a reasonable amount of effort.
