  4. Agenda • Current Exam Status • Computer-Based Testing (CBT) • NCEES Outreach

  5. Current Exam Status • NCEES currently produces: • Seven Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exams • One Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) exam • Twenty-four Principles and Practice of Engineering (PE) exams • One Principles and Practice of Surveying (PS) exam • One 16-hour Structural Engineering (SE) exam

  6. COMPUTER BASED TESTING LAUNCH UPDATE

  7. Current Exam Status • In 2010, NCEES voted to convert the FE and FS exams from pencil and paper format to computer-based tests “as soon as feasible”. • Both exams were already “closed-book” with a supplied reference handbook. • We contracted with Pearson VUE as our test delivery partner.

  8. Communications • Examinee guide • Exam day experience video • Short “how to” videos • How to use the FE/FS References • Hotkeys • Onscreen calculator • Reusable booklet for scratch work • How to flag items for review • Managing your time on exam day

  9. CBT exam administration • Price • $225: includes test center seat, examination, and results release • Testing windows • January–February • April–May • July–August • October–November • Test center locations • Pearson VUE testing centers • Pearsonvue.com/ncees for an interactive map of locations

  10. Exam registration • Opened November 4, 2013 • First appointments on January 2, 2014 • All examinees • Register online through NCEES • Pay all exam-related fees directly to NCEES via credit card • On exam day, attest that they will abide by rules and policies found in the NCEES Examinee Guide • NCEES release results directly to examinees within 7–10 days

  11. Exam changes • Length • 110 questions • 6-hour test center appointment • Nondisclosure agreement–2 minutes • Tutorial–8 minutes • Exam time–5 hours, 20 minutes • Scheduled break–25 minutes • Post-exam survey–5 minutes

  12. Exam changes • Exam and references on computer • Split screen • 24-inch monitor • Supplied references • Searchable • Available on NCEES website

  13. Typical FE exam screen Example—not for duplication

  14. FS and FE – current status (as of 10-7-14)

  15. FE/FS – pass rates (2014_C01.02 and 04.05)

  16. Professional exam transition status • In 2012, NCEES voted to convert the remaining exams from pencil and paper format to computer-based tests “as soon as feasible”. • Pearson VUE is currently calibrating items and evaluating banks • Pearson VUE to provide validity/reliability data based on number of tested items to EPE/EPS for recommendations to NCEES Board of Directors regarding format and length of exams. This will also help determine bank size requirements. • References – probable combination of imbedding in items, supplied reference, and secure website hosting of standards/codes – still working on the details. This will include discussion on graphs and charts.

  17. NCEES OUTREACH

  18. NCEES Outreach • As part of recent Annual Meeting in Seattle, NCEES partnered with the Pacific Science Center for Engineer It!, connecting professional engineers and surveyors with the public for hands-on exploration of science. Over 6,000 parents and children attended. • Presented the NCEES Engineer Award for connecting professional practice and education to the Seattle University Electrical and Computer Engineering Department for their submission, Microgrid System for a Wind and Solar Farm in rural Kenya. Award was established in 2009 to promote understanding of the value of licensure and encourage partnerships between the engineering profession and education.

  19. NCEES Outreach • NCEES is growing their relationship with Engineers without Borders (EWB). We currently support 4 project grants and will be working with them in the near future to expand our sponsorship role in order to reach engineering students to encourage them to pursue licensure. EWB is a humanitarian organization established to support community-driven development programs worldwide through partnerships that design and implement sustainable engineering projects. • We are involved with judging Future City Competitions (national and regional). • We will be a sponsor of a special geocaching event to celebrate Surveyors Week in 2015.

  20. NCEES Outreach • We are a sponsor of a special geocaching event to celebrate Surveyors Week in 2015. • We provide some funding for TwiST (Teaching with Spatial Technology), a program to teach K-12 teachers how to teach with Geographic Information Technology in the classroom. • We are a financial sponsor of the Trig-Star program, an annual high school mathematics competition (trigonometry) organized by NSPS.

  21. Ohio State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors

  22. 23. Requirements for PS Licensure in Ohio • Graduate of an ASAC/EAC/ETAC ABET accredited surveying curriculum of four years or more. • Graduate of an EAC/ABET accredited civil engineering curriculum with 16 semester hours or 24 quarter hours of Board-approved surveying coursework — at least six semester hours (or equivalent) in surveying of land boundaries. • Graduate of a Board-approved surveying program: Cincinnati State/University of Cincinnati, and Glenville State College (WV).

  24. Requirements for Licensure in Ohio • All applicants for registration as a PE or PS must complete four years (8 years for ETAC/ABET grads) of acceptable experience. • Must take and pass the NCEES Fundamentals and Principles and Practice examinations. • PS applicants must also take and pass a two-hour Ohio state-specific surveying exam.

  25. TOTAL EXAMS GIVEN BY YEAR

  26. SURVEYING EXAMS GIVEN BY YEAR

  27. SURVEYORS LICENSED BY YEAR

  28. NUMBER OF LICENSEES BY YEAR

  29. NCEES Future of Surveying Task Force Charge 1 • Evaluate the current state of the surveying profession in terms of what NCEES can do to mitigate the low number of candidates seeking licensure as professional surveyors and better market the value of a career in the surveying profession. Consider if revisions are needed to the definition of surveying to encompass new technology and methodology to broaden the potential base for licensed surveyors.

  30. NCEES Future of Surveying Task Force Charge 2 • Evaluate if state-specific surveying exams can be transitioned into region--specific exams or if state-specific surveying exams can be eliminated.
