    1. Foods and Nutrition Unit 5 Kitchen Appliances

    2. 5.1 Match terms related to kitchen appliances 1. combination oven - an oven that can do two types of cooking, such as conventional and convection 2. convection cooking- method of cooking in which foods are baked or roasted in a stream of heated air 3. convection oven - an oven that uses a fan to circulate hot air over food 4. energy guide - a yellow tag that is displayed on an all newly purchased major appliances which shows an estimated yearly energy usages for that product 5. hot spots - areas of food that during cooking reach a higher temperature than surrounding areas due to receiving a greater concentration of energy

    3. 6. microwave oven - a cooking device which uses invisible waves of energy that cause water molecules to rub against each other and produce heat which cooks the foods 7. service contract - repair and maintenance insurance purchased to cover a product for a specific length of time 8. standing time - the time during which foods finish cooking by internal heat after being removed from the cooking appliance 9. warranty - a written promise by a manufacturer that a product will meet specified standards of performance 10. wave patterns - the repeated cycle in which energy in a microwave oven is emitted by the magnetron tube

    4. 5.2 Describe selection, use, and care of large & small appliances Selection Consider how your family will use it. Consider your space limitations. Consider your budget. The energy guide (a yellow tag that is displayed on an all newly purchased major appliances which shows an estimated yearly energy usages for that product) will allow you to compare different models before purchasing.

    5. Use Look for universal design styles and features that allow all family members to work with ease. Special consideration is needed for family members with special needs. side-by side refrigerators built in oven units

    6. Care Read and use and care manuals that come with your appliances and do as they instruct. Consider purchasing a service contract (repair and maintenance insurance purchased to cover a product for a specific length of time) for major appliances. Be sure to mail in your warranty (a written promise by a manufacturer that a product will meet specified standards of performance) on all new appliances. Use the appliance for its intended use.

    7. 5.3 Describe trends in kitchen appliances 5.5 Discuss effect of technology in kitchen equipment perform a range of functions easy to clean little effort to use compact models to conserve space extra capacity for large families energy efficient high tech electronics reflect the latest decorator colors stainless steel integrated look

    8. convection cooking (method of cooking in which foods are baked or roasted in a stream of heated air) is becoming popular because of our busy lifestyles. convection ovens (an oven that uses a fan to circulate hot air over food) are used because they reduce the cooking time (the total amount of time food is exposed to a cooking source). combination ovens (an oven that can do two types of cooking, such as conventional and convection) reduce kitchen space

    9. Microwave Cooking Microwave ovens (a cooking device which uses invisible waves of energy that cause water molecules to rub against each other and produce heat which cooks the foods) : reduce the cooking time save up to 75% of the energy used by conventional ovens cook by high-frequency energy waves called microwaves produce wave patterns (the repeated cycle in which energy in a microwave oven is emitted by the magnetron tube) develop hot spots (areas of food that during cooking reach a higher temperature than surrounding areas due to receiving a greater concentration of energy). require standing time (the time during which foods finish cooking by internal heat after being removed from the cooking appliance).

    10. 5.4 State ways to conserve resources in the kitchen Use the microwave instead of using the oven cook more than one food at a time in the oven cover pans on the range to keep in heat avoid unnecessarily opening the oven door and letting out heat avoid opening refrigerator and freezer doors which lets in heat avoid letting the water run while washing dishes, vegetables, etc. run the dishwasher only when it is full. recycle
