  1. Salt Water Crocodile

  2. Information The Saltwater Crocodile is the world's largest reptile. These amazing creatures are found on the northern coast of Australia and inland for up to 100 kms or more. The Saltwater Crocodile has been reported to grow to lengths of 7 metres, but the average size of a Saltwater Crocodile is 4 metres long. They reproduce in the wet season, with the female crocodile laying up to 60 eggs at a time. When the crocodiles are born, only a very small number of these survive in the wild and grow to be adult crocodiles. The crocodile is now a protected species in Australia, however if human danger is a factor, the crocodile will be moved away from possible contact. Many years ago Australia used to export crocodile skin, this is now illegal.

  3. diet Saltwater Crocodiles take a wide variety of prey, although juveniles are restricted to smaller items such as insects, amphibians, crustaceans, small reptiles and fish. The larger the animal becomes, the larger its prey items are. Although a large male crocodile could take on a food item as large as a 1 tonne Water Buffalo, the majority of their diet consists of relatively small prey items such as crustaceans, fish, turtles, small mammals and birds.

  4. Breeding Around breeding season, which usually takes place during the wet season, large male crocodiles will patrol their stretches of water protecting their territory from intruding males. When Saltwater Crocodiles are courting one another, they will rub their heads and bodies together. Mating takes place in the water. Between 4-6 weeks after mating, the female will lay 40-60 eggs in her nest. The nest may be up to 80cm high and is made of vegetation broken off by the female's teeth and scraped together with her hind legs.

  5. Habitat As the name suggests these crocodiles are mainly found in Estuaries where tidal rivers meet the sea. This watery habitat is often mangrove lined They can also be found sometimes in the open sea or inland in freshwater swamps and billabongs DescriptionThe worlds largest reptile the "Salty" has a broad "stubby" snout with cone shaped teeth. Its average length is 4 meters but males 6 to 7 meters have been reported. Saltwater Crocs have rows of bony scales on their neck and back There colouring is mainly greyish brown with brown and yellow sides. Their rear feet are webbed to aid with swimming. It is thought that they live up to 70 to 100 years Their clear eyelids enable them to see underwater

  6. why is it a vertebrate & what have i learnt This animal is a vertebrate because it has a backbone and a spine, If they didn’t have a backbone or spine that means they would be a invertebrate. I have experienced a lot of things such as: why is it a vertebrate, where they live, how they breed and their diet.
