Significant Changes • BS will be 44 hours instead of 58-59. • BA will be 34 hours instead of 46. • Minor will be 15 hours instead of 17. • A net 5 courses will be removed from the catalog. • Increased experiential component. • At most 4 courses need to be offered per semester to offer all courses in a timely manner.

  4. The Need for a Redesign Reasons for a redesign include: • A rapidly changing field • Faculty changes • Smaller than expected enrollments, so courses could not be offered as often as intended • Increase student flexibility

  5. Design Guidelines • Streamline curriculum • remove tracks • reduce number of courses • Ensure all courses are taught regularly • Modernize courses • security and information assurance • virtualization and cloud • Incorporate experiential component • Continue following ABET/ACM guidelines

The Current BS Degree • IST Core (22 hours) • Breadth Requirements (12 hours) • Programming, Networking, DB, MIS • Depth Requirements (9 to 10 hours) • Pick one of programming, internet, database, networking • Senior Design (6 hours) • Mathematics (6 hours) • Communications (3 hours) 58 to 59 hours

  13. Experiential Learning 4 1-credit experiences, with subtitles like: • Cyber defense team • WWW support • Networking support • Contest support • High school interaction • Community support • Certification preparation

  14. Additional Requirements Previously, a certification exam was required. The new curriculum removes that requirement and requires a formal technical presentation.

  15. A Proposed Rotation • Department offers at most 4 IST courses per semester for major • Degree can be completed in 4 years, starting with IST 126 in Spring of Freshman year • Student may select any elective

  19. The New Minor in IST Current minor A minor in IST consists of a minimum of 17 hours, including: IST 126. Introduction to Information Science and Technology At least six hours in IST courses numbered 300 or above Note: CSC 204, CSC 205, and CSC 206 may be used in satisfying the requirement of at least 17 hours New Minor A minor in IST consists of a minimum of 15 hours, including: IST 126. Introduction to Information Science and Technology At least six hours in IST courses numbered 310 or above At most 3 hours of credit from IST 300.

  20. Catalog Changes New masthead, degree descriptions, and minor. Updated terminology in course descriptions will be submitted for the catalog.
