  3. The overall goal of the P&T process is to offer a mechanism for candidates to make as clear and as comprehensive a presentation of their accomplishments as possible. It is not the quality of any one piece of work or the length of the dossier but the overall quality of the candidate's record and the accompanying documentation that determine the outcome.

  4. TRACKS

  5. Current Promotion tracks at the College of Medicine Non-tenure track Tenure Track Academic (CT) Track Clinical Discipline Track Research Track Academic (RT) Track Clinical and Adjunct Tracks (0-50% appointments)

  6. Academic (CT)Associate Professor (CT)(Tenure track) • FTE: >50% • Used for: Clinical scientists • Criteria: Strong evidence of high quality scholarly activity including: • Independent peer-reviewed publications; development of a quality clinical practice; teaching; peer recognition at the local or regional level. • Federal funding is encouraged but is not required.

  7. Academic (RT)Associate Professor (RT)(Tenure track) • FTE: >50% • Used for: Basic scientists and some clinical scientists • Criteria: • Strong research focus with an independent basic or clinical research program supported by federal funding • strong evidence of high quality scholarly activities including: • independent peer-reviewed publications, Teaching and Peer recognition at national level.

Clinical DisciplineAssociate Professor of Clinical (Discipline Name)(Non-tenure Track) • FTE: >50% • Used for: Clinical educators • Criteria: Clinical Teaching; stature in clinical practice; clear commitment to department/ college mission is important. • Evidence of scholarly activity is required, although independent peer reviewed publications and federal funding are not required. • Peer recognition as clinician and/or teacher at the local level is required.

  9. ResearchResearch Associate Professor(Non-tenure Track) • FTE: >50% • Used for: Research scientists • Criteria: Strong evidence of high quality scholarly activity including independent peer-reviewed publications are required. • May have reduced expectations for federal funding, teaching and service activities. • Peer recognition at the national level is required.

  10. ClinicalClinical Associate Professor • FTE: 0-50% • Used for: Volunteer or part-time clinicians, usually based at an affiliate hospital. • Criteria: Teaching; patient care; stature in the practice of medicine. Sustained commitment to the educational program.

Time Line College-Level Submission Deadlines for Faculty Promotions • August – Clinical Discipline; Clinical and Adjunct Tracks (salaried) • September – Academic RT and Academic CT and Research Tracks (Assistant Professor to Associate Professor) • March – Clinical and Adjunct Tracks (non-salaried)

Steps Department Faculty Promotion Committee evaluation Department Chair Justification College FAPT Committee review (October/November) College Executive Committee Approval COM Dean All Campus FAPT Committee review (February) Provost and Graduate College Dean Approval Chancellor Approval (April) Board of Trustees Approval (July) The Department head will communicate with you at each step of approval There is provision for Appeal

  39. Promotion and Tenure Workshops • The Office of Faculty Affairs offers Promotion and Tenure (P&T) Workshops each spring (usually in March). These annual events are open to faculty from all parts of campus seeking promotion. The office also offers a workshop for underrepresented faculty. • These workshops are designed to help faculty members in their plans to seek promotion and will include a review of the relevant promotion and tenure processes.
