Study Group 10 mandate • Responsible for technical languages, the methods for their usage and other issues related to the software aspects of telecommunication systems. • Studies on modelling, specification and description techniques and on other software aspects will be developed in line with the requirements of and in co-operation with the relevant other Study Groups (4,7,11,13,16). • SG10 is Lead Study Group on Languages and Description Techniques within ITU-T • SG 10 Policy: Strong coupling with industrial needs and use

Study Group 10 Core Competence:Languages and Description Techniques • SDL, MSC, CHILL, ODL, TTCN • New: URN, DCL; and ASN.1 is to be included in 2002 • Language Combinations, including UML • Data, Time and Performance issues • Support by tool vendors essential General Software Issues: • Methods and Guidelines for use • Quality Aspects of Protocol-related Recommendations • Middleware and Architectures

Question 2: ODL - Object Definition Language • Z.130 Amendment 1 • Introduction of computational refinement concepts for supporting composition and decomposition of computational objects. • Adding of a new interface type based on signal exchange • New Z.130 Annex D • defines a mapping to CORBA-IDL 3.0 (Component IDL), • New Z.130 Annex E • defines a mapping to SDL-2000 • New Z.130 Annex F • defines a mapping to MSC-2000

  6. Question 11: DCL - Distribution and Configuration Language • New Recommendation for an ITU Deployment and Configuration Language (DCL) • Modelling systems from the engineering viewpoint

Question 3: Software Platforms and Middleware for the Telecom Domain • Framework: identify and specify the inter-domain reference points for the purpose of testing the associated specifications • Generic set of object services to support the distributed processing environment for the telecommunication domain • Techniques and functions to support the management of software infrastructures, object services and applications • Profile set for the DPE and their use to accommodate different sets of requirements. Generic requirements on the DPE are expressed in Z.600 • Investigation: need for QoS by the DPE

Key messages • Work is planned in TINA-relevant areas for the period 2001 - 2004 • ITU-T is fast: New ITU-T procedures, e.g. the Alternative Approval Procedure permit fast approval of Recommendations • However, clear requirements exist for work to be successful • Support and input from experts • Support from the industry for the implementation of concepts • Study Group 10 policy is to work only on issues for which there is industrial need or requirements from the standards bodies themselves, and in general tool support commitment
