  1. SIGACCESS Viability Review Vicki Hanson, Chair

  2. Transition status • Newsletter has been the reason for being in transition • As of Jan’05, we are completely up to date • Vol 80 & 81 (Sept’04 and Jan’05) out • Have content in hand for Vol 82, which will be our first online publication (June’05)

  3. Financials • Fund balance has decreased steadily since ’01, but we’ve taken steps to reverse this: • Newsletter has moved to an online publication • ASSETS moved to an annual conference • More DL material from ASSETS • First time in several years, budget for FY’06 projects a surplus

  4. Membership and volunteer development • Steadily growing membership • Ready pool of volunteers - Business meeting had high attendance and a large number of volunteers for ASSETS and SIGACCESS • New EC composition • New newsletter editor • New webmaster • New ‘Left Field’ monthly column on website • New conference organizing positions created to involve everyone who wanted to work on the committee • Looking for additional volunteer capacities as I have names of people who would like to help with SIGACCESS. Ideas?

  5. ASSETS conference • ASSETS’04 (6th in the series) was held in Atlanta, Oct’04 • Move from every 2 years to an annual conference • Reasons: • Attendees wanted a meeting of this community annually • Easier to maintain momentum with annual conference at a specific time of year • Concerns • Enough volunteers for an annual conference? • Answer: More than enough • Enough high quality papers for an annual conference? • Answer: ? Paper submissions due 4/15/05 • NSF support for Doctoral Consortium at ASSETS’04 • Have applied for (and expect to receive) the same for ASSETS’05 • Have applied the ACM Small SIG fund money for ASL interpreters

  6. Community Activities • Name change: SIGCAPH to SIGACCESS • 2 Best Paper Awards established for ASSETS • Best paper • Best student paper • Provided financial support for: • Workshop on “Accessible Layout – The Tension Between Accessibility and Visual Design” at WWW2004 • Workshop on “Engineering Accessible Design” at WWW2005 • Partner for CHI’05 conference • Grow SIGACCESS community: The request for interpreter support at ASSETS’05 is a way to reach out to the deaf community that has had little participation in SIGACCESS
