IAEG: what are the priorities? • Ensure full transparency in the process from country data to international series • Reconcile national and international data compilation • Improve reporting mechanisms from national to international • Reduce data gaps • Improve national ownership of estimates and country data adjustments • Improve coordination of national reporting on MDGs • Improve sub-national monitoring of the MDGs (for policy making, better allocation of resources across different population groups and regional areas). 2nd International Conference on MDG Statistics, 19-21 October 2011

Key recommended actions • Identify ways to improve coordination within the national statistical system, engaging the whole national statistical system, for national reporting and for reporting of data to international agencies • Continue to improve the content of the metadata and the tools available on the mdgs.un.org website • Provide training on metadata for the compilation of the indicators 2nd International Conference on MDG Statistics, 19-21 October 2011

UN Statistical Commission • UNSC has reviewed the IAEG work over the years and made recommendations • Key elements • Enhancing the dialogue between countries and international agencies • Ensuring full ownership by countries of MDG data • Developing capacity • Providing training on national and subnational monitoring • Promoting the use of SDMX 2nd International Conference on MDG Statistics, 19-21 October 2011

  7. Key actions recommended by UN Statistical Commission 2011 • Develop tools and methodology for country-level assessment of progress and make them widely available to countries • Continue to provide training to countries on monitoring MDGs at the subnational level • Continue the work to reconcile the national and international data and to improve coordination of MDG reporting • Continue to provide technical assistance and training to countries that wish to adopt the SDMX standards on MDG indicators 2nd International Conference on MDG Statistics, 19-21 October 2011

  8. The way forward • Ownership of national monitoring • Improve tools for sub-national monitoring • Resolve conceptual and methodological issues on some of the indicators (those not currently collected by countries) • Metadata and handbook widely available for national monitoring • Expand use of common platforms for data and metadata exchange 2nd International Conference on MDG Statistics, 19-21 October 2011
