  10. Motivation for design competition • Address issues in medicine and robotics • Robotic assistants and sutures • Disabled people and shoe laces

  11. Rules of design…They are what they are… • Rule # 1 states that… Final designs must be distinguishable from original robot kit prototype • Rule # 2 states that… Anything goes as long as it is not in contradiction to rule #1

  12. Rule #1 contdFinal designs must be distinguishable from original robot kit prototype • To be distinguishable from prototype a design must have • Functional modification • Aesthetic modification

  13. Functional Modification • Any change (addition or subtraction) that affects the function (however subtle) of the original model • Team must be able demonstrate the logic behind their modification and how it improves the original model • Programmable component (optional)

Aesthetic modification • Any modification that alters at least 50% of the robotic arms appearance and • can be perceived to be different from the original model if observed at a distance of at least 15feet • It could be • Painting • Addition of cosmetics • Artificial skin etc • Could specify audience for which design targets

  15. TIMELINE (tentative) • Mar 5th : Commencement address • Mar: 5th – Mar 11th : Purchase robotic kits • Mar 12th – April 1st : Proposal for design modification • April 1st – May 6th: Design and modification of parts • May 7th : Final demonstration

  16. Proposal for final designDue April 1st (subject to change) • Content (2 – 3 page) • Explanation/discussion of modifications (functional and aesthetic • Diagrams (technical drawings with dimensions) • Statement of budget

  17. The string (shoe lace)…And while we are on the subject of rules… • Shoe lace provided by UAB • Of a specific length • Teams could add weights to support one end of string • Any number of weights would be fine • Weights could be washers, a block of wood etc Small weights weight

  18. FINAL DEMONSTRATIONBe there • Race • Objective: point system • Presentation • Subjective: judges

Race (Point system) • “Point-graded” system • You get a point for: • Being able pick string • Moving string through any distance • Making a loop • Tying a knot • Tying a perfect knot • Number of knots (perfect or imperfect) • Speed • Fastest gets a lot of point but… • Fastest doesn’t necessarily win • A time limit might be imposed in an event were no team can knot the string

  20. Presentation • 5 minute presentation (PowerPoint) • Present/sell your idea • Video • 30 seconds – 1 minute • Show design do some unique task • No questions • Judging criteria • Quantity and quality of added components • Aesthetics • Efficiency of modification • Strength of knot

  21. Tools • Robotic Kits (robot arm trainer) • Purchased by the UAB (cost >$70) • Each team deposits $50 (to be reimbursed on May 7th) • Teams allowed to make any necessary modification

  22. Spending/buying • Teams can purchase any additional component • Spending limit of $100 • Possible re-imbursement by UAB
