  1. ITSUS “siamo noi” Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  2. ITSUS The alliance between research and design for a radical innovation in the collaborative workplace domain “..Libertà non è uno spazio libero, Libertà è partecipazione...” Giorgio Gaber “La Libertà” 1973 Freedom is not free space, freedom is participation Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  3. Foreword Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  4. Out of the mainstream As many are looking back at the personal computing (operating systems, windows, productivity tools, etc.) and at the point-to-point communication (email, chat, etc.), we are looking forward: • At Web 2.0 RIA (Rich Internet Application) • At Web 2.0 workplaces and contents self-managing • At Web 2.0 multi-point collaboration • At Web 2.0 mesh-up of all kinds of productivity tool and application • At Web 3.0 semantic information discovering and brokering Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  5. Re-launching innovation in ICT • With ancient PC and folder oriented storage - but also with legacy Web-browser and HTML based storage - we can not develop innovative applications. • Recent developments on collaborative platforms (Lotus, Open Text, Microsoft, etc.) have increased the number of functions and features but not improved them. • The Application-Servers and Portals are not suitable (serv-let, port-let, etc) for the dynamic service’s mesh-up, required by continuous e-business innovation. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  6. Is the market ready for what we propose? People and enterprises are not expecting what we propose, but the venerable “personal computing” paradigm and the legacy “web searching and browsing” also look more and more inadequate to support producers and/or consumers in the coming e-business world. We have innovative ideas for changing the fundamental “cloud services” can offer users. We believe that if we present them effectively, enterprises and consumers will react positively, discovering that they need what we are offering. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  7. A new development and marketing strategy • To promote the collaboration between software developers and service administrators, producers and consumers. • Continuous developing (evolutionary maintenance and customization) with plug-in open.SOA, SOAP/REST compliant • Employees ad managers involved in the deployed enterprise services at different levels and roles • Opening a wide discussion on the perspectives of the business and information society • Bringing research again the main game • Bringing design into the high-tech industry. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  8. Our promise Our initiative has a low risk profile, because a software prototype and some business models are at present available. The revenues are guaranteed by the software patents and by the royalties on deployed services. We believe we can realize a new collaborative workspace on the Internet, which enterprises (small or medium too) will appreciate for easy-effective support at the business, within and between their. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  9. Leveraging on design Innovative and business friendly technology, collaborating and emulations! Our initiative emerges at the crossroad between software development and business experiences, high-tech engineering and interaction design, ICT and SME in Italy, business communities design and stake-holder’s participation. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  10. The concept Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  11. ICT is starving for innovation • No real innovation in the last twenty years in operating systems, workstations and productivity tools. • Also the Email and Web 2.0, the killing applications of these past years, are not really suitable for the enterprise (most of all small or medium) business automation. • As well as the “pandemonium” of process and/or content and/or document and/or knowledge management systems and collaboration suites does not guarantee some business return of the investments. What's more we accomplish the current draft toward the “webization” of ICT applications. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  12. The limits of the personal and web computing paradigms. Personal computing and web searching and browsing are really useful only for simple and ad-hoc business jobs. Also enterprise portals technology is unable to accommodate the complexity of lots of business activities and marketing relationships: • Where is the request customer John does me about that offer? • Where did partner Rick tell my department that important thing? • Which is the business critical part of this huge dossier? Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  13. Beyond the desktop and webtop metaphors The desktop metaphor is over thirty years old, and webtop nearly ten ! • The display of today’s PCs are either populated with a huge number of icons and data or require functional commands to find the useful information. • In both cases, user frequently do not find what they are looking for, or find the wrong thing. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  14. A new paradigm: affairs and dossiers in the business communities • Our life and work interweaves a large number of different affairs. • Each affair has its participants and contents deliverable. • Each affair has its dossier, where authorized persons can look at its participants and contents • Each person works in several diverse interweaving affairs. • The new paradigm is characterized by its being oriented to business communities, reflecting situated-ness of human life and work. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  15. ITSUS- a workplace based on community-affair-dossier paradigm • At any moment, ITSUS presents, to the concerned personnel, the dossiers of the affairs, in with he or she is working jointly. • ITSUS users do not need to search for things: they have them ready at hand, in their own affairs-dossiers. • ITSUS enables workers to directly create and update the content of their dossiers. • ITSUS is not intrusive, but its behavior is gently pro-active Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  16. ITSUS in synthesis • ITSUS helps its users to manage the complexity of their life and businesses. • ITSUS is not intelligent (so far!), increases the intelligence of its users. • ITSUS embodies several groupware (directory, workflow, etc.) and process/content/knowledge management services. • ITSUS opens new possibilities to the design of social and business networks. • ITSUS represents a turning point in the cloud computing concept. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  17. The target users of ITSUS Today’s producers and/or consumers, who accomplish a great number of affairs at the same time, who have a great number of interactions witch other people and enterprises, have to manage overloads of information, but do not have adequate support to manage the complexity of their life and work: • Consumers • Producers • Employees • Managers • Professionals • Designers Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  18. The tip of an iceberg ITSUS is the kernel of a new generation of cloud-computing applications Starving fields as personal computing, web browsing, email systems, groupware and knowledge management, will be encouraged to innovate through ITSUS ITSUS is an opportunity for a radical improvement of the SaaS (Software as a Service) Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  19. The product Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  20. ITSUS components • An business server, embodying the community-affair-dossier paradigm. • Some procedures supporting the import/export of data/metadata from/to other applications in Semantic Web (XML/RDF) compliant way. • A SOAP/REST compliant SOA, for plug-in further vertical services on the business server. • A RIA (Rich Internet Application) compliant business client, with a radically new design Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  21. ITSUS – the community business server A radically new content-management paradigm for the cloud-computing, based on two simple rules: All contents created in some affair remain in its dossier Contents of different dossiers are shareable in same affair-chain In the dossier, personnel can access, on the one hand their colleagues in the affair (or partner in the“extraprise” affair-chain), on other hand the contents delivered, exchanged and shared in it. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  22. ITSUS – the community business server • Affairs-dossiers are organized by the current standards & procedures (use cases) of each enterprise in the business community. • That standards & procedure are created and updated by managers of the related enterprise. • A search engine for searching, across the dossiers, with the support of the enterprise “standards & procedures” semantic. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  23. ITSUS – the community business server • The business-server is incorporated into a high performance object-oriented data-base, directly exposed to Internet (avoiding some application server). • The business-client is efficiently coupled with the business-server with AJAX technology. • The business-client is based on a newly conceived RIA interface design, allowing users to understand easily what is going on, even when changes are not generated by theirs. Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008

  24. The integration services • The ITSUS “Legacy Wrapping Facility” enables users to continue working on legacy applications, enjoying the ITSUS “Work Flow”. • Supporting the import/export of data/metadata from/to other applications in Semantic Web (XML/RDF) compliant way (ex. business records download for its legal preservation). Giulio Beltrami, Marzo 2008
